Has anyone here hunted with these people or any other outfitter in Hawaii? Thanks, Rusty We band of brothers!

I have not, but I have hunted with Eugene Yap who is based on The Big Island. He has concessions, etc., all over the other islands, too. Gene has a first class operation. His telephone number is (808) 322-3201. [ 10-15-2002, 04:03: Message edited by: judgeg ]

Depends on the island. On the Big Island (Hawai'i), you can hunt hogs, sheep and goats that have been feral for generations. There are feral donkeys as well, but I don't know if it's legal to shoot them. Also, when British explorer Captain Vancouver came ashore in the late 18th century, he dropped off some cattle, descendants of which still roam the islands and tear up fences. I have seen one outfitter refer to them as "Vancouver Bulls," but that may have been marketing. The wingshooting is good, as there are a lot of imported species of game birds as well. There are turkeys all over the place on the Big Island once you get away from population centers. Hawai'i seems like a strange place to hunt, but the Parker Ranch looks a lot like Wyoming in some places, and lower country on the Kona side of the Big Island looks like the Texas Hill Country, which I have heard looks a lot like Kenya. Feral animals and exotics abound on the other islands. Most of them have some type of exotic deer, and I have also heard that on Nihau the hogs have really gotten out of hand. Firearms laws in Hawai'i are very strict, and the game laws are written to strongly favor local hunters over visitors. That gives outfitters free reign to charge what they like, as you can see here: http://www.hawaiian.net/~niihauisland/safaris.html. Ranches and outfitters on the Big Island offer far more economical hunts, but you have to consider all that the Niihau outfit offers to make a fair comparison. Hope this helps, Okie John.

With Gene Yap, mentioned above, you can hunt Mouflon sheep that are a pure strain, according to DNA testing. One afternoon I shot three boars while hunting with Gene and using my recurve. You may hunt up to 12,000 feet on Mauna Loa. It is more like hunting Mountain Goats in Alaska than what you would expect in Hawaii. In the winter, you can get in some pretty good snow storms. Gene has turkeys there, too. I used to live in Ohau in the Haiku Valley. Near where I lived there are wild hogs in the Pali Range within shouting distance of overlooks on numerous road. I have also hunted Maui and Molokai, also. If anyone is interested, I can put them on some hunts with "locals" that are quite reasonable and fun. Better be in great shape, though. Ah ha! Magnum PI has moved to Georgia! I won't be so reluctant to return to paradise, with the possibilities known now: 12,000 ft elevation mountain feral hunting in a blizzard, then down to the beach for a swim. Hey, that does sound like some kind of paradise, for sure! Uh, what's this doing in the Hunting Reports-Africa section?

DaggaRon, quote:I was wondering that myself. But we all know Rusty can barely read, so I took pity on him and left it here. Regards, Terry

Try this: http://www.hawaiisportsmen.com/ Give Bitsy a call, she's a friend of mine and will take care of you...tell her John from Oregon sent you. I spent some time on the Parker Ranch (largest ranch in the U.S.) when I was younger, you'd be hard pressed to find a more beautiful place.
