elk338My first African Safari " Makalaan Safaris"
A friend and I went on our first Safari the latter part of June. We went with Antonie and Melinda Louw of Makalaan Safaris. We hunted near "bushmanland" for a variety of plainsgame and harvested some real nice trophies, in our eyes anyway. We each got a nice Kudu, Gemsbok bull, Eland among others. Our kudu were 60" and 53". One of the gemsbok bulls was 38", our eland were both very nice also.
We had a wonderful time. Antonie and Melinda made us feel as if we were part of the family. The food and accomodations were excellent. the Game quality and qauntity were very good.

We thought this would be the trip of a "lifetime" and it was, but we are already figuring out how to get back.

I don't shoot elk at 600 yards for the same reasons I don't shoot ducks on the water, or turkeys from their roosts. If this confuses you then you're not welcome in my hunting camp.

elk338John used a winchester 70 in .338 and I used a remington 721B in 30-06. He used 225 grain triple shocks and I used 180 grain swift A-Frames. Both bullets worked extremely well.

Paul TunkisGlad you had such a nice time. Excellent trophies too! I hunted with Antonie in 2004 and I'll be back at his place in a few weeks for 18 days in September. Great operation and absolutely wonderful people. Did you have a chance to go to Etosha? Antonie offers trips there and they are certainly worth the time spent.
There is only one "first" safari and it looks like yours was a great success. Here's wishing you many more in the future.
It looks like you got your picture captions mixed up on the hartebeest, rather than a wildebeest. I mess up on my picture posting pretty frequently so don't take me for a perfectionist, just a sympathizer.

You are right I did get my caption wrong---Oh Well, no harm done and I don't mind you bringing it to my attention and thanks for taking the time to let me know that you looked at our pics.

Bob in TXI hunted with Tony and Melinda in '05. They run a great operation. Was Fritz there for your hunt? Getting to watch a bushman track was the highlight of my safari!! They are truly amazing!!

drwesHunted with Antonie and Melinda August 06. I will return and am booked for August 08. Great place to bow hunt and truly wonderful people,,, Fritz's tracking pulled me out of the fire several times. Truly amazing how these guys track.

We hunted on Antonie's ranch. His father's and Brother's ranches are available also.
