I have thought about the same thing myself. I almost went to RSA`s Eastern Cape this July but ended up in Namibia. In Eastern Cape I wanted to hunt the blue duiker. My booking agent told me that it was normally driven hunts, and that it was a 50/50 if the animal shot was a male or female..
Don`t know if every operation do it the same way.

I think most hunts are "driven" that is beaters with dogs push thru an area to move the little guys. My Blue Duiker is the one I am most proud of as they are tough to come by. Mine is a female but you just can't sex them, if it has horns shoot. I used my drilling with 16 ga. shot used O buck. I have it mounted on a small mountain with 6 other little guys and it is jumping thru brush and tall grass just as it was when I got it.

I read a hunting report the other day about blue duiker. They used another method as well. Sat in blinds in heavy bush waiting for the small one to come by.. After a total of 10 hours they got it..
Your blue duiker is great Die Ou Jagter. So is your "mountain" of the tiny ten...
Are you planning to complete the search for the small ones..?

I was in the neighbourhood and... Just kidding! Wink I got it from you on email. I`m having a dik-dik fullmounted, and asked for your opinion..
Hope you will succeed on your search! So far I have taken Steinbuck, Damara Dik-Dik and Klipspringer.. Still need a few more of them.. thumb
Could you please list the tiny ten for me?
Is it: blue, grey and red (natal) duiker, klipspringer, steinbuck, dik-dik, oribi (?), suni and sharpes and cape grysbok..?

Anders,

My tiny ten are as follows: Damaraland Dik-Dik, Sharpes Grysbok, Cape Grysbok, Blue Duiker, Natal Red Duiker, Livingstons Suni, Gray or Common Duiker, Klipspringer, Steenbok, and Orbi.

These can be taken in Namibia and RSA.

When one ventures further north i e central Africa one can add many more of the pygmy antelope.

In the south some add the Mt Reedbok and remove the Dik-Dik so as to have all from RSA.

How ever you choose you have a bunch of good hunting to obtain them all.

A good way to hunt the duikers (blue, red, red fronted, yellow backed) is to imitate their anguish call,
(a high pitched nazal sound you imitate by pinching your nose and saying nyyaahh, nyyyaaahh repeadedly, for the yellow backed one usally makes the sound a bit deeper in pitch)

The duiker will approach you, sometimes rather quickly and the shot is easiest with a shotgun.

I've hunted duikers a lot during my time in DR Congo.

seeing your list of tiny ones i think you should add the water chevrotain, an old ancestor to our deer, but males not having horns but fangs.
One would have to go to the nice big forest of Central Africa.

The tiny ten I refered to were those in Southern Africa i e RSA & Namibia. When you move north into the Central Africa there are many more Pygmy Antelope to be add to the list. The two tiniest are the Royal Antelope and Bates Antelope.
I know some people that call the little ones in Natal but I have not heard of them doing it in the Cape, but I don't know why it wouldn't work.

I was not aware there were any native deer in Africa. I do know the water deer and Reves Munjac have fangs and the Munjac also has antlers.
