Hi- I've hunted SA twice, had great times but have failed to get a kudu.

Just for kicks I'm thinking about a kudu hunt in Namibia; does anyone have kudu experience there?

Thanks.

Botswana is where you go for kudu. They are taking monsters every year

Check with Jan du Plessis of Sebra Safaris in Namibia. He has good kudu, and also gemsbok.

If you made 2 unsuccessful hunts in a high fence operation in RSA for kudu, somebody screwed the pooch. Shot kudu in Namibia and Botswana with plenty to choose from and these were no fence or cattle fence operations. They will cost about the same or slightly more. Headed back to Namibia in September.

Hunted last year with Johann Veldsman, Shona Safaris, neighbour of Jan du Plessis mentioned above. No high fences. Kudu, Gemsbok, Springbok and other species all made the ones I took in South Africa look pitifully small. You will see many Kudu every day. Good people!

Alternatively, take a Kudu on the group hunt I will advertise at a later date but at this venue, you are looking at 50 inches. However Namibia and especially Botswana are prime destinations for really big bulls.

I second the recommendation of Dale and Pom of Jan du Plessis of Sebra Hunting Safaris. I’ve hunted with Jan SIX times, and shot 3 Kudu, measuring 54”, 54 1/2” and 55 1/2” most recently in 2019. My trophy room won’t hold any more Kudu, so the 3 I shot were all I desired.

I've shot many Kudu in South Africa well over 50", mostly in the Limpopo. There are some big boys up there if you take the time and hunt hard. Check with Charl van Rooyen of Infinito Safaris. My biggest kudu was shot initially for leapord bait in Zimbabwe near Sissyvale between Colleen Bawn and Gwanda. However, when we got up to him, he measured 59 1/2" and 58 1/4", with about two and a half inches missing off of the shorter horn. I gladly paid the trophy fee, instead of the bait fee on that one. Big Grin

I have had some great kudu and eland hunts in namibia. I hunt with Pieter delport and hands down he has been one of the best I have ever hunted with. Was not looking for kudu last trip and past on at least 5 bulls of 50 to 53 inches on a short 7 day hunt. This year he took a 58 and 60 and a few others. Some of the best prices and areas to hunt. You want more info send me a pm and I can help you with more info

Namibia has some great kudu, especially over by the Botswana border. I shot a 60 1/2" there.

Honesty I can’t understand how especially in SA you came away without a kudu and on two separate trips unless it was with the same outfit?? Would love to know who you hunted with in SA and you really should let everyone know! This site is the best not only for knowing where to go but where not to! In Namibia I would find it hard to believe you won’t get your kudu, perhaps not the 60” but a nice respectable one.

Yes, I would like to know who you were hunting with.
This is the only site that I know of where you can post an honest critical review of a hunt and it is appreciated. An honest, level handed, negative report of an outfitter is real help to fellow hunters who are spending the big bucks on a guided hunt.
Thanks, Brian

Killed this bull in northern Namibia 20 years ago next month.

There are still plenty of them out there.

There are great kudu in Namibia, but I haven't hunted in that country since 2007, so everything I know has likely changed. It's Africa after all.

Namibia or Botswana are great destinations with really large ranches. I really enjoyed both places.

Botswana does seem to have more that will be 55 and up. I took a group of 6 to Tholo Safaris 5yrs ago, we took 6 ranging from 54-58". Blew a stalk on a CULL bull that was 54-55" with a significant amount broken off each horn. I still think about that bull often...

Nkwe Safaris in Bots also seems to be producing really well.

In Namibia, I'd chat with Karl Stumpfe from Ndumo & tell him what you're looking for. He's offering a PG hunt in the Caprivi (big DG area). Personally, I think getting a 'representative' Greater Kudu in an awesome area would be possibly the best overall experience.

Hunted with Johann Veldsmann/Shona Adventures some years ago. Great kudu, but before the drought/rabies cycle had arrived. Guessing it has recovered.

A few years ago a group of us booked a trip to Tholo in Botswana but got bumped to their sister camp called Bokamosa. From what I've gathered this property is more open but with less roads. I took a 54.5 and a 60in there. I also got some exceptional pg. I mean top notch animals. You can pm and we can discuss further. I'd be happy to send photos. That was a wonderful area. Good camp. You'll get a monster if you hold out.

As others have stated if Kudu is a priority then Tholo or Nkwe in Botswana (Ghanzi area) is both the best quality at the best price…
I’ve taken 9 trophy kudu there and 4 broken horn culls.
All mid 50s+ and 1 over 60. You can easily take 5 in a week
Plus excellent Eland tracking…
Gemsbuck over 40
I’ve taken over 25 kudu in 5 Countries and I suppose 10-15 areas…Botswana is the best for Kudu in both quality and numbers…most are in the free range cattle country….

Like you I had three hunts, 1 in Namibia and 2 in Zim and did not take a Kudu. I just returned back from Botswana, Bokamoso Safaris and took (2) kudu over 55". Saw and passed on KUDU every day. The property is 148,000 acres and full of game including elephant, lion, leopard and cheetah. If you want to see dangerous game along with plains game this is the place.

Tholo in Botswana or Kowas in Namibia. You will see a lot of bulls and shoot all you can afford.

.

I too have seen and shot a number of kudu in RSA (Eastern Cape, Limpopo), Namibia (various farms) and Bots. If I was looking for big, trophy bulls, I would go to Bots.

The question is, do you want a free range hunt or a farm hunt?

I want a free range hunt every time over a farm hunt.

Free range hunts for good kudu can be had in northern Namibia and Zambia and would be my choice over any farm hunt anywhere.

If Kudu is your goal, NKWE in Botswana has been THE place to go. I need to do a report, but I took 2 with Jaco, owner and head PH, and both were 57-58 inch bulls. I saw one over 60 and just couldn’t get close. A hunter in camp now just harvested one over 60…. It’s true free range hunting with huge populations of game and I never saw another hunter. I had the full camp to myself for 10 days, tens of thousands of acres. NKWE Safaris in Botswana should be at the top of anyone’s list who wants huge Kudu.

I also second Nkwe with Jaco. I haven't done a report yet. Both my son and I took very nice old and wide bulls on the same day, a couple hours apart. Between that time we saw 12 other bulls. A couple were young, a couple were bigger than the one I shot, but they weren't what I wanted. He did have a client take a 62" bull last week. A freaking stud!

The eland quality is 2nd to none as well. Saw herds that everyone was a shooter.

Johann has a beautiful place by the banks of the Huab river with free ranging game.
I hunted there with three friends in 2011, and all of us took nice kudu.
The camp, staff, landscape and terrain is worth a visit just by it self. And a daytrip to Etosha National park is the frosting on the cake .

With the very affordable Kudu trophy fees at Tholo & Nkwe, if Kudu are your "thing" then definitely take more than one!

No shortage of lovely kudu last year with Johann Veldsman at Shona Safaris, Namibia. Only species not fully recovered from the drought was warthog. No high fences.
