One of Us |
Gerald Warnock a past receipient of the Weatherby award and many other SCI hunting awards, collected 2 elephant in 5 days with us in NG 47 Botswana. Gerald has hunted with us for the last 5 years taking two elephants each year. This year Gerald brought his daughter Cindy and wife Margaret. On the second day of the hunt we came across a nice track at Elephant pan, a well known waterhole in the hunting block. The back foot had a 23 inch spread and the front foot a 19 inch diameter - sure signs of a potentialy good bull. The tracks headed west towards the concession boundary, so I put the bushman trackers on the track with a Garmin Rhino GPS and we went around to try cut the track on the western boundary. We traveled about 5 miles on the boundary with no tracks when the radio went and Pops our lead tracker told me he had seen the bull and he looked good. To save time we prepared and started walking in on Pops with the Rhino GPS tracker, as a first time operator it was confusing but we put our trust in the Rhino and took a heading. As we got close , I noticed that the elephant had to be between us and the trackers, so we looped around and the GPS took us right on to the trackers. Gerald and I went and took a look at the bull and he looked good - long Ivory and a big mature bull. Gerald shot at about 25 yards and the bull dropped. The first one was in the salt. 58x54 pounds On the 5th day we again picked up a track at Elephant pan , and the game was on. This bull walked for 19 miles before he stopped - we found him sleeping under a Mopane tree, creeping around we posistioned for the bull to stand up, the bull heard us at our 20 yards and started to rise - one shot form geralds trusty .458 lott and the old bull recieved his green card to the USA, this bull went 60 pounds. | ||
