Mokore Safaris 2017 season in Coutada 9 Mozambique.

Once again, we had some really good hunts in Coutada 9. This concession has come a very long way over the past 15 years and every hunt there has been phenomenal. The amount of game seen daily as well as the quality is outstanding.

Our first hunt was with long time client Dan Nordin who main target was a very specific buffalo bull from our old herd. This bull was no ordinary bull which we estimated around 47” spread and had been the dominant bull but was getting past his prime. Dan offered a very generous amount to hunt him with the proceeds to go towards us bringing in more buffalo. Fortunately, we had a fairly good idea where the main herd was living and hunted this herd from the outset. Late evening on the second day we saw him in the herd which was a huge relief to know we had located him as we had not seen him since the previous hunting season, but it was only until late evening on the third day when we finally managed to close the gap and Dan put him down with a couple good shots from his 458. He was a beautiful old warrior who we know had passed on his good genes.
After this Dan managed to pick up a few other species that he did not already take on previous hunts with us.

The bull just before the shot.

Dan has also kindly donated 3 satellite collars which we intend to fit onto 3 lionesses from different prides to help us monitor pride structures and territories, this will in turn help us protect them better.

This is what we are fighting day and night not to see..

This is what we want to see..

In late August we started our second phase of bringing in more buffalo to Coutada 9. This operation took about 3 weeks where we successfully moved 200 buffalo from the Zambezi Delta to our holding/release bomas in C9. We are proud to say that we now have about 350 buffalo in Coutada 9 which is a good base population for us to now build on. As of next year we plan on hunting a small percentage out of this population. These hunts combined with the exceptional plainsgame will make for some excellent hunts.

Several other good hunts took place in September and October.
Jim Hinde hunted Nyala, Eland and Bushbuck plus a few other species plus some tiger fishing. Jim had failed on both Nyala and Sable in C9 five years prior but this trip we counted 33 Nyala bulls in the 10 days we hunted with 20 of them being shooters. I think Jim will verify that the number of game seen was incredible.

Jim Also donated meat to the local chief and also donated meat and money for proper desks to our local RSS school.

These are just a few of the many meat distributions we do annually to the surrounding communities.

John who hunted with me on Mokore in the SVC a few years back came to c9 this year for some of the different species we have on offer and despite being over 80 years he went home with some very good trophies. He was also fortunate to be involved with parts of the buffalo release program which he really enjoyed. John plans on another hunt with us next year.

Carrie and Barbara came back for their second safari in C9 to get a few of the species which they never got on their previous trip and went home with a nice nyala plus some other good trophies.

Justin and his wife Bethany came on their first African and Justin said he had done plenty of research to find a wild unfenced area with a good selection of game and finally chose C9 with Mokore. Fifteen trophies later they left very satisfied with the free-range hunting and the quality of game taken.

Mike came on a short 5 day hunt with us and took two buffalo bulls in the Delta and then nine other good trophies in Coutada 9. Needless to say he was very happy with his hunt and the results way exceeded his expectations.

We had several other hunters come through other outfitters so will no post all these hunts except the elephant bull taken. Not very heavy but beautiful ivory and was shot on the fourth day of the hunt.

Coutada 9 is the finest plainsgame area I have ever hunted with the very wide range of species of top quality trophies combined with a large hunting area with very low hunting pressure. This now combined with buffalo, lion or elephant offers some great hunting. We offer some of the finest quality spiral horned animals in Africa, this year we took 3 bushbuck over 17 inches, two eland over 37 inches, we have taken several nyala over 30 inches and chances of getting a kudu that touches 60 is not out of the question.

We hope you like the report and pictures and hope to see some of you at either Dallas or Las Vegas show.

I struggled with photobucket so this report is a bit late but wishing you all a belated Christmas and a Happy New Year. Report on our Zimbabwe hunts to follow.

Outstanding, just shows how wildlife responds to good management. The Duckworths are to be commended for investing a tremendous amount of money and work and to see it come to fruit.

Neil,

Now with the bolstering of the resident buffalo by 200 giving you huntable numbers a superb area will become just outstanding. Great work.

Wonderful trophies. C9 is a primo destination. I was there in 2015 and it appears to have gotten even better.

Why no Leopard on quota? I should imagine there would be plenty in that part of the Country

For some reason the leopard population has always been very low despite perfect habitat and an abundance of small prey. Possibly because leopard and lion can cover a huge distance and go out of our core protected area and get trapped? We are hoping to try bring in some leopard this year to boost our population as they should thrive there.

I wish there was a way to get more of those photos with the traps out to the general public. Its a part of Africa people have no clue about. Thanks for posting. I'd love to come to this concession sometime.

Some nice trophies for sure but really impressed with that first buffalo. Darn bull is a corker.
