Hey,

as a german hunter, I`m very interested hunting Buffalo in southern africa. Last year I hunted in Namibia and I was successful shooting Kudu, Eland, Oryx, Hartebeest and Warthog. Now I`m looking for a good outfitter for a 7-day-hunt in South Africa, Zimbabwe or Tansania. A problem might be, that my wife shall come come with me as a nunhunting companion. Therefore the accommodation should be in a good standard. I think, the price for a such safari could be in the range of 7000-9000 Dollars including daily rates and the fee for the buffalo (without the flights). Is that enough money or should I plan for more ? It would be great, if I get some fine adresses.

Welcome. I would recommend Rob and Barry Style of Buffalo Range Safaris in Zimbabwe. I am hunting with them in 2007 for buffalo and assorted plains game. They are an old and very well respected outfit. In addition, they have many hunters from Germany and attend your annual hunting show similar to the SCI in the USA.

Check out their website at www.buffalorangesafaris.com then send them an email for information and references in Germany.

You might want to post this question on the "African Hunting" forum as well. In addition, you might want to search that forum for this topic.

Good luck.

Regards,

RCG

Weidmansheil and welcome to the forum. I reckon about the only place you'll get a Buff package for that price is in Zimbabwe. If you want to hunt there you could also try Myles Mccullum & Buzz Charlton, Andy Hunter, Ian Gibson or our very own Ganyana who posts here...... Any of those guys will give you a good hunt. you might have to pay more than your stated budget even there......

If you want to hunt Tanzania you'll have to pay considerably more. My company sells a TZ 1x1 package for US$12500 including the Buffalo but excluding the charter.

Welcome to the forum.

I would forget about hunting buffalo in South Africa.

Both Zimbabwe and Tanzania would meet your requirements, not sure about the total costs though.

The standard of living in the camp has been very high in all the places we hunted. And service surpasses any 5-star hotel.

For both first-rate hunting and first-rate accommodations, I (as will others) can recommend Senuko Lodge in the Save Conservancy.

The hunting operation of Senuko is shangaanhunters.

The cheapest buffalo hunts you will find in Tanzania are in the Selous. This however requires a charter from Dar es Salaam which increase the price and, generally speaking, the camps in the Selous are rustic.

There are some excellent buffalo in the Masailand area of Tanzania, no charter is required (you will be driven to camp from Arusha) and the camps are generally nicer than the Selous.

Prices in Tanzania are probably going to exceed your budget.

You have two choices in Zimbabwe. You can hunt in the Zambezi Valley. The camps are generally nice permanent camps. It will require a charter to get there. The plains game population, generally speaking, is usually not that abundant.

The other choice in Zimbabwe is to hunt on one of the conservancies. Such as Lemco or Save conservancies. This may or may not require a charter. The camps are usually very nice and the plains game population is more abundant than in the Zambezi Valley.

The basic difference in the Zambezi Valley and the conservancies is that the Valley is more remote and more of a feeling of being in the "darkest of Africa." The conservancies will be fenced (although they are so large that this does not affect the hunting).

It will probably be a bit cheaper to hunt in Zimbabwe, but even then, I'm not certain you can find a $9,000 buffalo hunt there.

Some websites to go to for more information:

Safari Trackers

HHK Safaris

Swainsons Safaris

I would suggest Matapula Safaris in Zimbabwe. They have a beautiful permanent camp along the Zambezi. The food and accomodations are outstanding. No air charters required. My wife accompanies me as a non-hunter on all my trips and this was her favorite.

Germanhunter,
Here are some reputable safari companys worth getting Buffalo hunt prices from.
They all hunt the rugged and remote Safari and communal hunting areas of the Zambeze valley of Zimbabwe.
A safari of seven to ten days is good for Buffalo and plains game and the best times for Buffalo are june, july, august and september.
September is the hottest of these months but game will be found not far from water.

Germanhunter,

Although buffalo may appear to be more expensive in South Africa than in some of the other African countries there are costs associated to hunting in other African countries that should be considered such as charter costs government license fees, firearm importation costs etc. You could get a complete buffalo hunt in South Africa for around the 11,000 Euro mark without having to incur any of the extra costs mentioned.

Furthermore, South Africa is great for non-hunting companions and offers excellent tourism and sightseeing opportunities - something to think about -.

Is there some free ranging hunting bordering the Kruger?

There are private wildlife conservancies on vast tracks of private property bordering Kruger that have an open boundary with the Park. There is a fence but not on the park side of the properties. These properties offer free range hunting for the Big 4 and produce some exceptional trophies.

Saeed, you can hunt free range buffalo in SA, but then it will cost you more than the stated Euro 11000. There are some buffalo up for tenders in provicial parks, also some private reserves bordering Kruger. However, I still rather promote a hunt in Namibia or Zimbabwe, as it is gennerally less expensive. I do not have experience of Moz or Tanz, so leave them out of my comment.

Saeed,

I suppose it depends on what you term "free range". There are privately owned game preserves with buffalo on them in several parts of SA. These preserves range in size from a few thousand acres to more than 25,000 acres. The Phalaborwa area close to Kruger is one of the areas where you will find buff on privately owned property.

Buffalo hunting inside the Greater Kruger is also possible and some outfitters (unfortunately not me at present) have hunting rights inside areas such as the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve - a 150K acre reserve bordering Kruger Park without any fences between the reserve and Kruger. These hunts are indeed more expensive than the 11K Euro I mentioned.

Mozambique offers some excellent buff hunts in the Mahimba area (open from August onwards). You could also find some lone bulls at Tchumatchato. Feel free to contact me for more information. chris@christroskiesafaris.com

Germanhunter, after researching this myself a few times, I would add a thousand or two to your estimate to cover the observer fee for your wife and other "extras."

Bob, Regrettably I am not the owner of either of the areas. Both the concessions still belong to Sandy and I have an arrangement with him to I can take my clients there when he has availability. As far as I know the areas did sell although I do not know to what extent.

My friend and PH Jan Dumon has access to the concessions bordering on the Kruger and he can be reached at mwshumba@mweb.co.za These are as close to free ranging buffalo as I know of in South Africa. Jan knows me by my Christian name William and not my nickname Wink. I'm sure he would be glad to discuss the possibilities with any of you.
