Munyamadzi 2017

It has been another great hunting season at Munyamadzi with some very successful hunts and great trophies. Munyamadzi managed to get a lion on quota for this year. And we managed to kill a magnificent lion. It is great that all of our conservation efforts are paying off. All species of wildlife in our area are increasing in numbers including the big cats. In my opinion the private unfenced wildlife reserves in Zambia are the most successful conservation projects in southern Africa at the moment. And it is great to see that the US is now open to import of our lion trophies. This gives us hope that the world is slowly learning that our effort in conservation through hunting is a valid and recognized tool.

At the end of 2016 we started doing biodiversity monitoring using distance sampling and foot transects; this is done in the early and late dry season.  Our anti-poaching scouts have been trained to use the equipment and understand the methods, building capacity within our staff, and walk a total of 114km of transects in less than 6 days.  These data will be able to tell us two things: what species is present (using fresh tracks, dung, dens, etc.) and an estimate of how many individuals of each species is present.

In conjunction with this we have deployed camera traps around the property to collect photographs of carnivores – mainly leopard and lion.  This is to enable us to identify individuals and groups to get a sense of what and how many we have at Munyamadzi.

This work is supervised by, and data analyzed by, an independent conservation and research NGO – Lion Landscapes – which relies on donor funding.  The objective behind this program is to monitor the effects of current management on wildlife populations (e.g. anti-poaching strategies) as well as to provide academically-sound population estimates which can be used to set hunting quotas on the Reserve.  We are interested in maintaining a sustainable ecosystem through responsible hunting, scientific monitoring and adaptive management.

We would like to thank all hunters and non-hunters that have supported our efforts at Munyamadzi by hunting with us or donating to our cause.

Here all the trophies that have been taken at Munyamadzi this year:

First Leopard

Second Leopard

First buff

Then we got this magnificent 47 inch buffalo. The client said he just wanted an old buffalo. He didn't care what size it was. He got lucky!

Amphibians we dragged out of the Luangwa River

Some of the PG from this season. Still got one more PG hunt to go and will add these later on.

And my absolutely best trophy of the year:

Hope you all have a great silly season. Im already looking forward to next season to see what that brings.

Over the next two weeks I will be posting photos from some of the other areas I have hunted this year.

Cheers for now

Fantastic, always great to concession holders making decisions based on sound conservation.

Lion is a brute and that second kudu must be the best looking kudu I have ever seen.

How long do you have your area for?

Our area is private. And therefore we are able to make long term investment into the area.

It is really refreshing to see a well managed property. Wildlife is a renewable resource and it is amazing how fast it responds when given a chance. You are to be congratulated on a outstanding job. Well done.

Thor, I take it that you did not end up doing a AR group hunt this year. Any chance you might in 2018? That struck me as a unique opportunity to enjoy a hunt with a few fellow AR members.
