T.CarrWHATS THE CHEAPEST BUFFALO HUNT
Just browsing some websites:
1. ZIM: 2X1 5 day buffalo $6,800 (includes trophy fee and charter).
2. ZIM: A ten-day cape buffalo hunt 2 x 1 includes all food, lodging, charter flight, trophy fee for buffalo and
air fare from New York for $9900 each or 1 x 1 $11,400.
3. TNZ: Selous Area Cape Buffalo hunt 2X1 $5875. Includes all trophy fees, gun permits and guild fees. We offer other animals at trophy fees. Hartebeest $450, Wildebeest $450, Zebra $650, Impala $300, Warthog $400.
I assume he means guide fees not "guild fees", doesn't mention charter costs or government fees or concessions fees.McCarthy Adventures1. ZIM: 5 Day Buffalo Safari: 1x1 $6,750.00 - 2x1 $6,500.00
Includes all daily rates, plus the trophy fee for one Cape Buffalo per hunter.
Plus charter, dip/pack and tax. See very bottom of that web page.African Hunting Adventures [see the bottom of the Swainson's page].
1. ZIM: 7 DAY Buffalo Bull Hunt package (1 X 1) for $7900.00, (2X1) $7200. Hunt includes daily rate, trophy fee, transportation, 2% Gov. Tax, and MARS insurance plus plains game are allowed based on published trophy fees and quota availability.
No charter required according to another page on the website.2. ZIM: 6 day buffalo package 1 x1 US $ 7200, 2X1 US$ 6500 each includes daily rate, trophy fee for one bull buffalo and transfer fees.
Safari & QuiltsI'm not endorsing any of these booking agents or outfitters as I haven't hunted with them. Just showing what prices are out there.

Ropes7-Day Buffalo Only Package includes daily rates and trophy fee……..$7,900
This is from the site of one of the members on this board. Only 2k more and people here have endorsed the outfitter..
12 April 2005, 14:56
BwanamichHmmmm....
Let's do some math;
$5,900 per person.
lessHunting permit $450
7 day Gov cons fee $700
Gov T/handling fee $200
1st buff Gov Trophy fee $750
fire arm import permit fee $120
charter return (per person average) $1,250
Total "fixed deductions" $3,470
That leaves $2,430 to cover the "cost" of outfitting the safari and PH, etc for 7 days - or $347 per day!!
Possible? Probably, but the outfitters aren't making any money

Adventurous1I don't have a dog in this mix but wanted to add a comment none the less.
Terry mentioned a booking agent McCarthy in one of his posts. This is Jim McCarthy Adventures of Harrisburg, Pa.. I have booked just 1 trip thru this person and it was to BC Canada for moose/grizzly. at the time he offered it at around $3000 ($2000 below the then current rate in 1990) The outfitter was good enough but after I killed a good moose on day 1 and a med. grizzly on day 3 of a 10 day trip the outfitter had his guide pack all my stuff and place them on the dirt landing strip while I was out fishing. When I returned and asked what was up he told me that's the end of the trip "you killed your game", I replied "it is a 10 day trip I paid for" he said "get in the plane or spend the winter!"
When i got back home to Pa I called Jim McCarthy asked him what was up and I wanted a 7 day refund! To this day I have not gotten zilch out of either of those two scam artists! ADV1

MARK H. YOUNGGuys,
I don't know if this is the cheapest buff in Africa but it might be the best deal. 1x1 all inclusive 7 day buffalo hunt in Zim for $5900. Reasonable expectation would be a mature bull of 38-40". Also available is a non-trophy elephant(broken tusks, one tusk etc.) for $8900.00 for a 7 day hunt. We can also offer a combo of the above for $10,500. Adam has put a full detailed description on the African hunting forum. Check it out.

Gringo CazadorI don't have a dog in this fight either, and I'm of the opinion that you get what you pay for most of the time, but would like to make a comment or two. Bartering and etc over prices for goods and services have been going on since the beginning of time and prices vary.
I've had car salesman to plumbers tell me no way I could get that price and in most cases I wasnt looking for a deal, just trying not to get my britches ripped. Maybe not always, but sometimes a person can get a deal, if we couldn't get deals we would have quit trying a long time ago. Looks kinda the same on this topic. Are these lower priced hunts the top of the line, probably not, but can a guys shoot a buff, if I had to bet I'd say he could. Will cost pop up that raise the price some, probably. Will it piss off the guys asking top dollar, the ones that arent booked up more than likely. Also, some of the deals look like they are short hunts, not just reduced price, that may be the ticket for guys that have trouble taking off from jobs/wife/kids.
10 hunts at a high margin/15 hunts at a lower margin..........end of the yr about the same money is made if I had to bet.

Adventurous1in truth some people do not need all the romance of the more elaborate safaris and are willing to make shorter hunts, skip the poolside drinks, etc just to swing the cost of a buffalo hunt.
I know I have been in that position in the past, when wanting to hunt elk. I was young and from the east coast with 3 kids and no $ but wanted to hunt elk in the Rockies.
I skipped the fancy high end hunts an made a 1 horse trip back in on public land . I killed a nice big bull with my bow that now hangs in my den an means as much to me as if I'd been on an Apache Reservation in NM. ADV1

LHowellTembo,
If you filter out the shocked exclamations of competing booking agents and outfitters, your 99% may be a little high.

I still maintain that this string has a lot of good information. Both sides of the issue must have logical reason for their pricing and comments. You've got to sort through it all and make yourself as knowledgeable and comfortable as you can - then do it! It will be quite easy for analysis paralysis to set in if you must get ALL the information down ironclad.

TemboLes, Point taken. This string does have some good information,if you take the comments of the competing booking agents and outfitters with a grain of salt.

For those of you that didn't the cheapest deal is a 2X1 buff hunt in K2 with the charter, 1 buffalo and the whole 9 yards for $7500 ea. We also can do the same deal on a 10 day schedule for $11000. We're now talking Zim prices for a Selous hunt.

Phil LozanoIt sounds to me like they are hunting 2 people on one license. If I am wrong I will apologize.
If it is 2 on 1 license, it does not matter what the price or the block, it is a violation of Tanzania law, which will make it a violation of the Lacey Act as well.
I would hope no one would advertise a hunt that would encourage anyone to be unlawful or violate any laws.
I hope I am wrong and this is a legit deal.
There is no way I can match that with the charter. If they can do it legally, good for them.
I would suggest anyone inquiring about this hunt ask how many licenses are involved.
Best,
Phil

LHowellMark,
Why or how is this hunt better or cheaper than the $5,900 hunt offered by Luxuryhunts.com?
By saying " ...the whole nine yards..." do you mean; daily rate, trophy fee, charter, and ALL fees and licenses/permits etc?
Do I understand that this is good only for this year? Assume left over/unsold quota?
This is $5,500 [+ charter = $7,500?] cheaper than your 10 day hunt? Thats an amazing discount!

MARK H. YOUNGLHowell
What I meant was that there would be no other costs to the client associated with the hunt. Charter and trophy fee for 1 buffalo are included. $7500.00 NO extras. You can also take a Nyasa wildebeest. Lichenstein's hartebeest, impala, warthog and zebra on a trophy fee basis.
If you read back through the African forum you will see some very nice things said about this K2 area where these hunts will be conducted. The company hunting this area is still Kiboko safaris but it is now part of Rungwa Game Safaris run by Harpreet Braar. We are the sole booking agent for this outfit. We have several opening with the first being July 29.
I'm not trying to make a comparison between these hunts and any other. I'm just telling you what we can offer with an established operator in a great area.

Mark

T. Carr A little heads up!
Referring to your link to “Safari & Quilt†on buffalo hunting.
Mozambique Hunts
Regarding the offered hunts by Mbala Safaris, I would advise AR members to be careful. On the 2005 annual outfitters meeting of Mozambique Safari Operators I asked specifically about this “outfit†the government official representing Tete province. According to him Maballa Safaris had a look at the area and this was it. Never heard any thing again and Accordingly the area had not been allocated to any one as per 14th of April 2005.
It takes lots of time and money to build up an area for hunting.
In regards to the advertised Gaza “Concessionâ€.
This it not a concession, the area could be develop, provided if proper land allocation would be granted by the Counsel of Ministers (Parlament, for land allocated in this size). as a game farm / ranch. This has not been done.
Game farms have to be in existence for fife years before hunting rights can be granted and if the approved development and Management plan is fulfilled. Then the owner can apply for quotas.
Some other questionable parts of the advertising.
Hunting Season for all of Mozambique 1st June till 30th of November, not march.
No exceptions granted according to the National Director Mr. A. Madope.
In the published quota allocations, no mention of any of this areas and no quota allocated to a company Mabala Safaris.
Giraffe, Roan and Tessebe are fully protected in Mozambique.
Transport by 4x4 from Pietersburg to hunting area in 3 Hrs?? BS, maybe in a day.
Perhaps someone jumping the gun again and selling something what’s he doesn’t have..(Yet?)
Thanks

Did some Googling on Mbabala Safaris. There is an outfitter in RSA with that name, but the website has prices for the year 2002. The owner is Carl Erasmus. Don't know if this is the same outfit that is offering the hunts in MOZ.
Mbabala South AfricaLook at the bottom of this page, this high school teacher in Oregan says he is the owner of Mbabala Safaris in Mozambique.

I found Wolfgram's LJW Adventures (mentioned on his school page above).
LJW AdventuresIt does talk about Carl Erasmus and Mbabala Safaris and hunting in Mozambique.
So we have an RSA outfitter (with an out of date website) and an Oregan high school teacher offering hunts in Mozambique.

Blaser,
I've found that not booking at this past SCI was a good move. I am seeing many cancelled hunts with reputable outfitters becoming available however the flip side to that is I blew a chance with the outfitters I WANTED so it's a double edged sword.
The guys here can steer you in the right direction. I'm headed to Zambia for my buff hunt but the deal is through friends so not a convential booking arrangement.

MARK H. YOUNGLes,
I was just reading back over this thread and came across your phrase "Analysis Paralysis". Nobody could have said it better. Eventually you have to pick someone to trust. There is no way to research every single occurence that might come up during your safari. You can drive yourself nuts trying to find the BEST deal. I'm not suggesting that anyone just pick a company or booking agent blindly but if you get enough information swirling around in your head you can take a lot of fun out of the process.

One thing did strike me as odd though is that although it's an EU arms embago, you never here of it affecting hunters from other EU states??? Maybe their legislation is confined to dealing with weapons of war and not sporting firearms, but it might be a point to consider for the future..
