Just back from my second safari with Zambezi Hunters. Jonathan Hulme has to be the best PH in all of Africa. I have taken 10 animals, all very nice trophies. A 40" buffalo, 80kg leopard, 54" tall 43" wide kudu, etc. As soon as I can figure out how to post pics. I will.

Congratulations on your successful hunt with Johnny. My husband and I were with John on a lion/buffalo hunt in the Chirisa concession during August 2000. Johnny is an excellent PH. Was Amos still one of his trackers? Looking forward to seeing your photos.

Dr. Tim BurkhartI see you have an African name. My name given to me by the Zambezi trackers was "Chebuhkute" which is "to shoot a fly". We were scheduled to hunt crocodile with Johnny in Omay during 2003, but he left National/HHK Safaris.
We returned to Zim in 2005 for a leopard hunt with HHK in Lemco and are scheduled for a bull elephant for my husband and buffalo for me this March in Chirisa. We really enjoyed hunting with Johnny and see him every year at S.C.I.

Two Blasers, eh... The full stock one must have been a fairly recent addition to your arsenal. They have only been available about a year or so??

If there is an AR meeting in Reno, you let me know, okay Kathi? Yes Mike, the Blaser R-93 Stutzen you see was one of the very first in the US this past winter. I made a visit to the factory in Isny,Deutschland last year and picked out a few goodies. It just takes forever to get them here. I actually own several stocks and barrel combinations...but the Stutzen version is my favorite. Any other Blaser nuts like me out there?

Dr. Tim BurkhartTo answer your questions: I hope to go back again this next year to get a sable, waterbuck and some other plainsgame that has managed to elude me. Two safaris and I can't seem to get a warthog. They just don't make themselves available!
The caliber I used on my first hunt was a .416 Remington mag. and the second trip (in honor of the 100th anniversary)I used a 30.06. Of course, all ammunition was my own special loads cooked up in the basement and wow, did they perform. I used a .416 400 grain Swift A-frame with Varget powder and it worked wonders on everything from cape buffalo to impala. This past hunt I used a .30 180 grain Swift Scirocco with H 4350. My leopard dropped with one shot. This load in my Blaser Stutzen shoots a big jagged hole at 100 yards with a 3 shot group.

Dr. Tim BurkhartI am new at this hunt report thing but if anyone wants more details on the two safaris I did with Zanbezi Hunters let me know. I do have to tell you that hunting in the Save River Valley is not for the faint of heart. We faced charging elephant cows, raging rhinos and all manner of beasts. We started telling Jonathan our PH that this wasn't the Save Conservancy, this was Jurassic "freaking" Park.
On another topic...I recently aquired a 9.3 X 62 mm barrel for my Blaser and I'm wondering what everyone out there has to say about this caliber. My test loads so far show that it is quite accurate. I would think this would be the ultimate Plainsgame cartridge for the plains and forests of Zimbabwe. Any thoughts out there from the more experienced?

ozhunterYes, the Blasers in 9.3x62 are very accurate and are a top choice for Plains game in the bushy terrain found in most of Zimbabwe.
A friend (daggaboybuff) and I both have 9.3x62 barrels for our Blasers and find them exceptionally accurate, fast and well balanced.
My Blaser ATTACHE 9.3X62 has served me well on a swag of game including some cape Buffalo, a Hippo, Lion and an assortment plains game.

Dr. Tim BurkhartJust wondering what you dedicated African hunters think of doing a plainsgame hunt with a .308 Winchester?
I have had good success with the 30.06 and there is only a frog's hair difference in ballistics between them.
Any opinions?

I am impressed that you managed to hoist that hoss up onto your shoulders.
I also hunt with a couple of Blaser R93s and multiple barrels - all of which I bought years ago when Blasers were still more or less "reasonably" priced.
Every time I head off on a trip, it seems one of them manages to end up in my rifle case.

I haven't used any other rifle since I discovered the Blaser R-93 back in 1999. I had several others in the gun safe but slowly the others have disappeared and now it's all Blasers.
You are right that they were more reasonable. They are starting to get expensive! My advice to everyone...I've got mine...go get your's...before you can't afford it!

A .308 with proper buller selection will serve you well, especially if you are anticipating closer shots. I've had excellent results with Winchester 180 gn. rounds on a wide variety of plains game. Did not try them on Eland, but would not have hesitated had the right opportunity presented itself. IMHO...shot placement is the key, not the small differences in caliber size, etc. A qualifier to my response is that I've only taken one shot over 200 yds. Most were more like 100 and less.

In my experience, most of the shots I've taken in Africa are between 20 yards and at the most 200 yards. I did notice a difference this year over last year's hunt. Last year it seemed like everything dropped with one shot from my .416, where as, this year everything ran off 100 or so yards after I hit it with my 30.06. Everything...except for my leopard which fell where he was standing. I think though the leopard is the softest of the Big 5 and certainly isn't as jacked up or as wound up as impala and kudu.
You are so right about shot placement ...I'll just have to be sure my first shot is good and then not worry about the rest.
Well, here is my plan. Next trip I'll take my .416 for the big stuff and the .308 for everything else.

Dr. Tim BurkhartIt is looking good for yet another trip to Zim. This year for waterbuck and sable! Any advice out there?
I've decided to take my 9.3 X 62mm Blaser with 286 grain Barnes Triple Shock bullets. They group great, and a small group for some reason gives me alot of confidence when it comes to trigger time.
On another note...
ANY ONE OUT THERE GOING TO RENO? If there is a group meeting...let me know. Thanks.

I am looking at one for my 416 for elephant and buffalo. It is a departure for me, because I love my Schmidt and Benders, but they claim to be close in quality and more than half the cost.

I met David Hulme at Hammond Camp in May of 2005. He was kind enough to autograph his book for me.
Last year we met Gerald "Mac" Mc Raney and Chris Dorsey at Sango. The OLN boys had been there filming. You never know who or what you are going to run into hunting with Jonathan and the crew from Zambezi Hunters.
I am trying to work on a trip for later this year but we can't seem to find an elephant tag. If anybody is interested they did have an opening in August for buffalo and a buffalo/leopard hunt. As you can see from my pictures they have great success!
