Date of the hunt - August 19th to 25th
PH - Thor Kirchner
Area - Munyamadzi Zambia
Animals sought - Hippo / Roan / Grysbok
Gun - .458 Win Mag / .300 Win Mag

I have just returned from a successful Hippo/Roan hunt at Munyamadzi Zambia with PH Thor Kirchner, this being my second hunt at Munyamadzi. After the long journey from the USA to Zambia I arrived with all my luggage and no troubles. This trip I have overnighted in JoBerg at City Lodge Hotel which I found to be very nice.
Upon arrival in camp we settled in and spent the evening sharing stories around the camp fire, this was after eating a great dinner. The next morning we set off to shoot the guns and begin our search for the Roan/grysbok. We have viewed many animals but no luck this morning on the roan. After our mid day lunch and we set out again checking different areas only to find some female roan and a ton of other game, this place has a lot of animals.
On day two we set out to look over the hippo's to see if we can find an old mature one. After looking over a couple of pods of them we crossed by a nice looking bull. We waited for what seemed forever to look him over. After 30 to 40 minutes the bull moved into a good position to take the shot. All the time I was lying on the river bank waiting for the Ok to shoot and finally Thor whispered take him. I slowly squeezed the trigger and the hippo went down. I quickly rose to my feet while Thor was saying reload. The hippo rose after a few minutes so I put another round in him.

Day 3 and 4 we searched for the elusive grysbok crossing by s few of them but never got the chance to connect. We have searched for roan as well making many stalks looking over a several groups, either they were cows or smaller bulls. Finally we have crossed by a nice bull but he knew we were after him, every time we got in position for a shot off he went. Thor was trying his best to get the largest roan as we had 5 hunting days after the hippo. Over these two days we crossed by many trophy animals, like 58+ inch Kudu, so many bushbucks above the 15 inch mark, and many nice puku.

Day 5 we set out passing up a nice 18 inch or so bushbuck standing 20 meters away. Thor being the man of many words said there is a nice bushbuck and continued to drive off. He explained later that bushbuck could have been very close to his record book bushbuck last year. I was not hunting bushbuck if had I known I certainly would tried for him.
Well this morning we did not cross by any roan so after a mid day lunch we set out for the roan. After a short drive into an area we did not check in the morning we seen the roan. The vehicle stopped and off we went to stalk the roan. We stalked for a short while and managed to see him standing broadside about 100 yards out. The sticks went up and as I set the gun on them off he went. We stalked him for another short while and found him walking, we set up and chose an area where if he crossed I had a shot. Well sure enough he stopped and I finally got my chance, I got the go ahead from Thor and placed a nice shot. Thor and the tracker started saying you got him, nice shot. We followed up and ended up pushing him, so off we went tracking him and Thor thought of were he was heading which was large open area where I could get a shot. I went with the vehicle to this open area while he continued tracking him. Upon arrival in the open area one of the trackers noticed him through the edge of trees. The roan started to run off we got out and followed him a short distance where I got another shot.
I don't have a good picture as somehow I lost half of my pictures so I hope Thor can post a better picture. Here is what I have from my phone when we got back to camp.

Day 6 we checked a Hyena bait we set out on day 4 and found they have been hitting it so we freshened up the bait and planned to sit that night. After this we set out to find the grysbok but had no luck. We have seen one dart off and got out with the gun walked up the road a short distance but he did not stay around long enough to get a shot. Later that day we went out to the hyena bait and shortly after our arrival this guy came in.

I was lucky on the hyena this time. I know many people, along with myself on other safaris, tried many times for these hyena's.

I had a very successful safari and highly recommend Munyamadzi. There is a lot of game and they have tremendous trophies. We have seen many buffalo, about 150 in one heard and another 50-60 in another. There is a lot of plainsgame with Kudu, Bushbuck, and Roan trophies very nice. This place is crawling with game and has a very comfortable camp, just be careful of the occasional lion roaring behind your chalet at night or the elephant that decides to eat off the tree next your chalet or even the hippo eating the grass out front. The place is truly wild Africa.

Very nice roan bull! Well done.

Nice roan but passing up an 18" bushbuck? I don't think that I could do that.....I take that back, I know that I couldn't do that!
