Good day,

Here is a hunt report I am posting for my friend Peter Nelles. Peter booked his hunt through Kobus Honibal of Africa Thirstland Safaris at very short notice, and in order to facilitate the safari, ATS bought a buff/hippo from Zambezi Hunters in the Save Conservancy. It was an absolute pleasure to meet Peter whilst he was here hunting buffalo with PH Thierry Labat. We will get some pictures up soon.

Dave

My name is Peter Nelles ,I am a german hunter from wiehl, which is a small town in the Cologne area.
I want to report to my hunting friends in the world some impressions of my last Africa-Hunt in November 2008 from the 10th to the 24th last month.
The start was a phone call in October to Mr.Kobus Honiball from Africa Thirstland Safari with the request on a Hippo and Buffallo hunt shortly.-I talked to Kobus month ago on a hunting farm in Namibia where we met, about the dangerous game hunts he offers. Then pretty soon I gave him my call and he arranged a wonderful hunt for me in Namibia,RSA,and Zimbabwe shortly. After my arrival November 10th in Windhoek Klaus Tietz one of Kobus PH``s
picked me up and we drove to a concession of ATS near Tsumeb.I have been on this concession before and know Klaus and the family we stayed at very well from previous hunts. The first three days we hunted successfully an old Eland bull by stalking(five hours) and Caracal and Warthog, then it happend suddenly:Kobus phoned on the third day telling me about a male Leopard who killed lots of sheep and game in the kalahari desert at Chillies farm-after driving back to Windhoek we jumped into Kobus 210 Cessna and here we are on the back of a truck following Leopard tracks. Some of the farmers and Francois Bergh a young but experienced PH were well organized by Kobus so we cold find the hidden Leopard-he attacked our vehicles three times but with the hunters luck and the help you need in such a dangerous situation i shot the cat just before an upcoming attack-what a wonderful moment, what a start of my Air-Safari.The next day we took of in the 210 towards Zimbabwe to hunt Hippo and Buffallo-this type of safari is only possible with a small aircraft which gives you the flexibility in that time frame. Here we are Kobus,Francois and myself all three pilots and Kobus and Francois two Professional hunters who are also- aspecially Kobus is a very experienced pilot in all weather situations also in IMC conditions. Zimbabwe a wonderful country, Hammond and Mahinya very impressive hunting areas for Big Game and Plainsgame also-we saw all Big Five and all of the dangerous six-we hunted hard with Terry the Ph at Hammond and a good team .The secret of successful hunting to me is to have a good leader and an experienced team and to listen what they tell you.
Kobus,Francois and Terry guided me successful on my dream-hunt I shot Buffallo(an old bull out of a group of 13) Hippo,Impalas,Baboons and on a very tricky hunt a bushbock. The time in Hammond the hospitality and the evening talks we had with David Hulme the writer I will never forget. The whole time i felt well guided and protected by Kobus-this man knows what to do and how to teach-thank you Kobus and all the others -Francois the falcon-eyed man who fights as hard on a Baboon as on a Lion. Terry the very calm but professional unfeared guy knowing the area very well.David for spending his knowledge and humour to us,he gave me the inspiration of an elephant-hunt together with an observer-David-to have after the safari an illustrated book-good idea. To tell my feelings exactly is not possible but I need more hunts in the real bush with Kobus.and his team.
Last but very special-on our way back to Namibia Kobus offered me the chance to hunt a female lion in RSA(Kalahari) it came true like in a dream.I shot a capital lioness at least 160 kg.-then you can imagine we had a big party.
Eventually hunters like me are dreamers but that is important for our lives-but we need the realistic experience of the Guides they bring us to impressive hunts and selected trophies .Thanks and take care Yours Peter Sorry if the names are written wrong-Iwill post some pictures later.

I forgot to tell you about my weapons -all trophies were shot with a .416 Rem.Mag except of the Baboons and small game. I use always Federal trophy bonded fabric ammo-with good success in penetration and effect. My other caliber is a 300 RUM-180 gr.bullit from Rem. for long distances.I would like to learn my own ammo-if there is time and teaching.Peter

@Peter: many thanks for your report directly from Germany:-) Regarding the 300 RUm: I have great success with Accubonds for long distance and Nosler and Barnes for the larger african antilopes. Merry Xmas

If you have a herd of 13 antelope, how many is that in metric?
