Early bird catches….uh…BIG TROPHIES!

I would like to share the following trophies, hunted this past week, with my friends on AR.

This also goes to show that a good hunt can be had in the warmer summer months in southern Africa, if you like the heat!

I was just getting adjusted to the fine warm weather we enjoy now in South Africa, when I jumped into a hunt with 2 clients from Denmark.

Glen and Helene Hansen, are the owners of the renowned Gunroom in Denmark, and we have become very good friends over the last 3 years.

I was therefore looking forward to a relaxed week of hunting and fun, with some good campfire stories, after 4 weeks of marketing Infinito’s hunts in the U.S.

Little did we know what fantastic trophies we would kill on this hunt.

All hunting was done walk and stalk on our 30,000 acre consession in the Limpopo province of South Africa. The scratches on my legs visible on the warthog picture is testimony to that! We only hunted for three hours in the morning and again three hours in the evening due to the heat.

The rest of the day was spend next to the swimming pool or reading! No cellphone reception or internet access had us totally relaxed by the first evening.

Glen used a Weatherby Vanguard in 270 Win and Helene a Sauer 202 also in 270Win. Both used 150gr. Winchester XP3 Bullets (supreme elite series I believe?)

I was of course very sceptical of the little 270Win, but a combination of good shot placement, and strong bullets accounted for all these dead animals!

Glen’s Kudu was one of those where I made the biggest mess-up a PH can make…..assuming, and we know what the mother of assumption is. We saw this bull in a thicket and the big, blue body, white tips and very thick horns that he was hiding in the branches. He had us all convinced he was the father of all Kudu. I asked Glen if he wanted it, and of course he nodded yes. The Bull made only about 80 yards.

When we got there a severe case of ground shrinkage was apparent. The bull before our eyes had deep curls, long white tips, heavy horns, about 8 years old, but they were SHORT!!!!! He taped out at 48” but we had a great hunt and experience getting him, and of course Glen was all smiles, so all ended well.

This fantastic warthog is a dream trophy. Glen shot him at last light. I did not even see the tusks properly in the long grass. I just saw the huge body and warts and new it was a big boar. The end result is clear. The 270Win nailed him on the spot!

Helena shot this fantastic Impala ram one morning. Apart for being a monster of 26” he is the only Impala to have ever charged me! He did not know about us as he walked up the game trail, and Helena shot him at 25 yards in the chest. He just bucked a bit and ran straight at us!!!! Good thing this petite young lady worked the bolt and gave him another one just has he turned 5 yards from us. He was of course not really charging us, but it would have been interesting if he ran into us being confused like that!

Enjoy the pictures!
Helena’s 28” Blue Wildebeest

Glen’s 27” Impala. This is the biggest I have hunted with a client…….to date!

A Big Zebra Stallion

A 28” Waterbuck

We also had a fantastic day at Pilansberg watching Elephants!

The roads visible in the pictures was simply because the grass was so long in the bush that I took all the pictures when we retrieved the animals to the roads!
