Hi, All - please excuse the multiple posts - I appreciate everyone's advice and comments and am getting up to speed with the forums. Once I can figure out how to delete the other posts, I will! In the meantime here is the whole story to date - I'm waiting for more from Ivan... All the best, Andy Cool Explorer Satellite Day 2 Day 3 - FROM IVAN: Well people , its been pretty exciting these last few days , day three found us hanging our hioppo out and right off the bat there they were two big male lion tracks in the road , so the whole day was spent selecting great places on all fopir ends of where we thought these two males may walk in the night - heavy and dirty work but as we sat to our delicious meal that night we all felt that a hard day of baiting would certainly pay off in the days to come !!! Day 4 - FROM IVAN: Two leopards hit our bbaits last night and a big old lioness , , we took a nice old topi in the afternoon that will make up a fifth bait , its a great advantage to this part of afrioca , the wide variety of plaisn game available - , not bad for just 4 days into it ,3 cats on bait !!! the leopard looks from his tracks like a good male so tommorow we will build a blind and sit if he feeds again tonight - Day 5 - From Ivan Our leopard fed again in the night so this morning we built the blind , nice that we are in an area with lots of great grass , the blind was about 70 yards from the bait - It was just two hours and 20 minutes when the cat came in , sniffed around the base of the tree , then sat and stared in our direction , I thought that my heart would come out of my mouth - we could have shot him on the ground but with him looking in our direction I didn't want to risk him seeing the barrel move !! Doug made a perfect shot , he leapt in the air and fell to the ground and went off running - we waited about ten minutes then the three of us (doug , me and wilhelm) followed up and he was right there just 20 yards from the bait6 tree !! What a great day !!!! Day 6 & 7 Well now that we have a beautiful leopard in the salt we are focussing entirely on the lion , the last two days have been pretty much running pur bait lines , the hippo is very stinky now and so we took a couple of defassa waterbuck to boost those baits and then of course a little evening guineafowl shoot for the pot !!! The guineafowl schnitzels were delicious!!! Day 8 I wish today I had something different to report , the day started awesome , buffalo droppings and tracks from the night , so off we set ! Two hours later we caught up to the three bulls and actually bumped them in the long grass , they jumped up , ran about 30 yards and stopped- dopug dropped to a knee and took the shot , then as the buff humped up and took off he took a second shot into its disappearing rump - that all took place at about 9.00 am and that's unfortunately the last time we saw him , he trotted with very little blood for the first five kilometres of tracking and then after about 12 kilometres the long grass and hard ground finally skunked us- it was a quiet dinner table tonight, not only the fact that we wounded a great animal , but compounded by our need for bait - hunt enough and it will happen but its always bad when it does - Day 9 Doug kicked the monkey right off his back this morning with two great common reedbuck and then being that we were pretty close to camp we went back in for lunch - first time since the first day when we arrived that we saw the camp in daylight !! That afternoon we found another natural kill and so hung both reedbuck at the site , lots of mane hairs on the buff carcass that remained so hopefully he will feed ! | ||
