Mokore Safaris has started a new exciting bush wise educational program in Mozambique called Njiri Eco camp.
This offers young people an opportunity to spend 2-4 weeks in our concession Coutada 9 experiencing and learning about the untamed Mozambique bush.
The new camp was built last year and is set up to accommodate 8 guests. We have experienced instructors and field guides to run the activities and benefits to local communities. The course includes the following activities:
Animal tracking and track identification
Game scouts
Anti poaching
Species ID
Bush walks
Reserve Management
Conservation
Animal behaviour and anatomy
Bush fire management and control
Survival skills.
Basic mechanical skills.

This is a wonderful opportunity to understand how conservation through hunting works , the benefits to the surrounding communities and will offer a great bush experience.
Our 2 week course costs $1500 and the 4 week course costs $2650 .This covers basic meals, tutoring, accommodation and field activities.
Costs not included are drinks ,and international flights to Tete Mozambique.

If anyone has children or friends looking for a life changing experience either just after leaving school or during the summer school vacations the this is a wonderful opportunity for them.
For more info on this please visit our website www.njiriecocamp.com

Very nice Neil, sort of building on the Rifa Camp notion in Zimbabwe. Several weeks ago I was able to read some letters of young people that have been through Rifa Camp thanking SCI Houston for the chapter's support of the camp and talking about what the experience in Rifa Camp meant to them. Some of the letters were very touching. Kudos to Mokore Safaris for taking the initiative to start this in Mozambique!

Fantastic stuff Neil, great to see projects like this going on, and involving the local community too, getting them to understand the importance of conservation

This is awesome. I can certainly see local SCI Chapters getting behind scholarships if they knew about the program.

Great stuff. I posted the pictures with some comments on my facebook timeline!

I am sure to raise a few hackles among my non-hunting family & friends! They could do with a bit of real education! Big Grin

Thanks all for the comments . I agree that conservation through hunting and community awareness are the only realistic ways to improve the wildlife areas in Africa.

The lions came in from Phinda Game Reserve in KZN ,South Africa. Was a massive operation to first find free range lions that could hunt for themselves and then move them 1000 miles by road through an African border post. Not to mention 18 months of red tape and negotiations with Government department to get the project approved. Was one of my most satisfying achievements to date. The only thing that will top that is if we ever get past the red tape to get more buffalo into coutada 9 .

Neil..is the Red Tape regarding the buffalo on the Mozambique side or the Zim side? I assume the buff would be coming from Zim. Thought I saw an article about 6 months ago where the Moz Tourism Minister visited and blessed the buff reintroduction to C9?

Last year the hold up was to do with politics on the Zim side, but there are plenty of buffalo in the Marromeu reserve in Moz that would be a lot easier for us but red tape there also . Quite frustrating. We'll keep chipping away at all options until we finally succeed .

With the recent news of the release of 24 lions into Coutada 11 I wondered how the lions in Coutada 9 were faring.
And did they manage to get some buffaloes translocated to Coutada 9? It seems some great projects are happening in Mozambique!

I can weigh in on the buffalo. 50 relocated to C9 in 2015 and another 200 in 2017..all from the Marromeu.

I wonder how my life would be different if I had done something like this at 18-20 years old. I'd probably not be typing this post from an office chair.

Just to complement your statement I must say that 10 lions were released in Coutada 10 also and Marromeu Safaris is also part of this fantastic initiative.
I would love to see more programes like this two

Do you mean that 10 of the 24 lions were released in Coutada 10? Or that Marromeu Safaris in a seperate project has released 10 lions in Coutada 10?

Either way, great to see all these initiatives and different organisations working together. I understand Mokore also swapped elands and zebras for waterbucks with Gorongosa NP.
