This is from one of Jake's hunters who just scored on a Brown Bear hunt. The hunt location is the great state of Alaska about 80 miles east of Denali Park. Main goal the interior Grizzly. Hunting Guide :Jake Jefferson Master Guide #212 Black River Hunting Camps Wasilla, Alaska Scheduled hunt 10 days over bait. Gun Blaser R-8 Sucess Stutzen 375HH TRIJICON 3x9 green dot. Old Western 375 HH Soft Nose. You young guys have no idea what those even are. Jake picked me up at my hotel in Anchorage 10 am June 17,. Made a few stops one at his house on the way to get the new Arctic Cat 6 man Crew and supplies. We headed out on a 5 hour drive to Alpine Creek Lodge. This was the accommodations both room and board for this hunt. After checking in we went and check a few baits and seen recent activity at baits. Jake retrieved the flash cards from the cameras and refreshed the bait stations. We sat that evening for a few hours but no activity. Only till 10 pm. Went back to the lodge and reviewed the pictures seen many bears hitting the baits. Main hits 10pm, 12 midnight , 2am and some at 5 am. Most places dark but this time of year in Alaska we have 24 hours of daylight. Next morning we went out checked baits and picked out one station we wanted to concentrate on. There was a hill about 130 yards away with a fast moving and noisy creek between us an the bait. Also the prevailing winds were very much in our favor. Unlike black bear baiting our shooting position was much farther away, 130 yards. Grizzly are 10 times more cautious then Blacks. So we needed to stay as far away as possible. His previous week he seen bears on camera but none after hours and hours of sitting on baits. The Previous week only one quick view of a bear no shot opportunities. Jake this time set up a large scent resistant pop up blind on this hill over looking the bait with a cleared shooting lane. We went out about 7 PM Saturday night the official first day. Well at 10 pm out came a beautiful sow with 3 cubs, we had seen this family on the pictures and video. It was amazing the stayed for 40 minutes then left. The first 15 minutes she was very nervous. About 15 minutes later she was back with here crew, boy were they fun to watch, standing, dancing sound, rubbing their backs on trees and of course eating the bait. That lasted about 10 minutes and she left, that was a little after 11 pm it was light like midday. Then about 2 am she came back she was there with her crew again for about 40 minutes and left. We stayed till about 8 am but no other bears showed. Went to the lodge and slept and eat great food. We also met many travelers from all over the world and had some great visits. Oh we where he only hunters. The bait sites we went to on the 4 wheeler were over a mile from the lodge. Just a note we counted over 10 different bears on the camera. That as the day before we arrived. Well the next night Sunday Father's Day we went out to the same blind about 7 pm. We had a slight rain an cooler temperatures . Well a 9 pm I caught a quick glimpse of a bear very light colored the same as the previous sow that visited us the night before but it was not her. Then from around the back of the tree came in this big brute and another bear. This one we had never seen before. Well I was in the shooting chair Jake said someone needs to shoot that bear. Well after the bear positioned him self in the front of the bait barrel on his bellie eating I had a dead on 130 yard shot. Well, set the Blaser Sucess stutzen in firing mode, Trijicon 3x9 green dot on kill zone. Off went the first 270 grain soft point 375 HH. He spun around he was on his bellie eating, made a full turn then hit him with second shot. He crawled out of site. Jake said you hit him good, second shot broke his back. We waited to se if the other bears would show. Oh forgot my buddy was with us, as another hunter we then we're wanting a bear for him. Well after 30 minutes the others must have taken off. We started to the bear from our blind and noticed a tree shaking near our last site ,could not figure. Finally thru the brush and trees seen the bear he was still moving around some what. Tried getting another shot but lost view. We decided to move in an I was staying on one side of the river as Jake went to the bait checking for the wounded bear. Well when Jake got to the bait the bear crawled about 25 yards and was dead. While he was expiring he grabbed a tree near the base one about 4" in diameter and was biting it, tore at it savagely then died. We decided since it was early and the bear was way to heavy to move to go back and sit. And See what happens. Well about 11 pm in came the sow with the 3 cubs and gave us another wonderful show. Just amazing. Then low and behold at 12:15 am, in came a big bore He was big. Don got on him, Jake was ready for the back up. After a few count downs Dons borrowed 30-06 barked. I watched that huge bear jump up go round and round on it hind legs, then dropped an rolled. I was waiting for a follow up shot, well not sure what took place with Don but he said he could not see the bear for a follow up shot. Jake shot but had a dud mis Fire. I watching in fear then finally 2 shots came but in my view the bear was on the move. We decided to leave about an hour or so later to go to the lodge. We spent about 2 hours got coffee and went to the bear. It had been raining since we left. Well our nightmare began, no bear. It looked like a very solid hit but nothing around. It was raining hard and no blood no good indication of its path of departure. That deep feeling of regret not being able to find this huge bear set in. We went to the lodge after the rain stopped an gathered up 10 people to help, we did a deep shoulder to shoulder search all around the area no bear. We had to give up, no results. Then we took my bear to a place to prepare skinning. Took us over an hour just to load the bear in the back of the 4 wheeler with ropes and come along. The bear was a majestic green measure of 8'10" very good size for inland grizzly. The hide fur was exceptional no rubs just thick and a beautiful dark brown. Well we packed up and left the next day (today) sitting in the airport waiting 8 hours for plane. Jake went home my partner gone to California. Hunt was over way to soon but very successful . Rating of the hunt with out question 10 Room and food 10 People we met 10. I have been wanting to hunt with Jake for a few years. He is a very young guy but was patient with this old deaf hunter. And if you think baiting is not sporting I would think again. This was the first Grizzly taken over bait in this area ever in Alaska legally. Every one at the lodge was excited, many never seen bears up close. We saved probably they estimated over 50 moose calves with this one bore harvested. Well long winded but killing time in the airport waiting for Ryan S. Thanks for reading, Jake would like to hear your comments.

Sounds like a great hunt and an exciting time. I am thinking about a grizz hunt sometimes in the next year or two. I did some pricing at the ISE in Denver and they seemed to be running around $24K with about a 70% success rate. (This was in Alaska, not Africa.) BH63 Hunting buff is better than sex!

You need one Mr Baldry! Although the 80 series do a great job. Only restriction is it may struggle to load and carry a Dagga Boy.
