Hunted Zululand the first 5 days of Oct. for Red Duiker and Suni. Hunted the Mhlosinga Bush Lodge property which is next to trhe Phinda Resource Reserve and Lulubush which is 4000 acres in side the Reserve. Took a very nice 2" Red Duiker and again had no luck on the Suni.

We then traveled to Zimbabawe (11 days) and hunted Hippo, management bull Elephant, Sharpes Grysbok and Chobe Bushbuck. Had sucess on all but the bushbuck. We hunted out of Russ Brooms Sengwa camp on Lake Kariba. The Temps were from 108 to 112 degrees.

We took the Hippo on the Sengwa River and it is a hoot to have an crowd of a hundred or more villagers watching the hunt. I thought I had just won the Derby but the shouts were for the meat they would have for the next few days. He was a good bull with 25 4/8 tusks. The next evening a Hippo killed a villager and we had to sort him out, and provide much needed protein for another village.

On the 14th we took a management bull elephant and again provided more much needed protein for another village.

Took two Sharpes Grysbok one 2" and the second one 2 4/16" both very nice the first was older and had rounded horns.

The food and accomidations were great in both camps. In RSA I had one of my favorite meals. Fried Red Duiker (or any small antelope)liver, kidney and heart with fried eggs for brunch. The back strap from the Hippo provided excellent steaks grilled over the camp fire.

I am not a fish eater but fried Bream is very nice.

My PH for the whole trip was Mark DeWet with whom I have hunted many times and will see in Dallas at his booth - promo .

Used my 16X16 over 9.3X72R drilling for the Duiker and my 416 Taylor for all Zim game - yes the Grysbok as we found the airlines had cracked the stock on my drilling and it was spray painting everywhere.

Just biding time until time to return to Africa.

Congratulations on a great hunt. Sucks about your drilling. Hope you have insurance to cover it.

Now, for the important stuff. Where are the pictures? You know we have to have pics.

Great report, just get us some of your great pictures to go with it. Keep working on the Livingstone's Suni. Your time will come. When I shot mine, another german hunter had been on nine (9) safaris to KZN to try and get one. He finally did, after seeing one in the parking area of the Falaza Game Resort! The next morning he and the PH walked out into the neighboring brush and eventually found the suni a short distance away and shot it. Congratulations on a successful hunt in spite of the disappointment with the Suni and your cracked rifle stock.

UEG, funny I hunted Falaza last year for my Suni and Red Duiker with no luck. The Suni is only one I need to have the Southern Afrcia tiny ten. I did see a Suni but would have had to shoot right in front of the trackers face. He was a bit miffed and said I should have shot, just not my style.

It sounds like you had a great hunt, congratulations...I'll just pile on and say that we'll be expecting the pictures of course. Very sorry to hear about the drilling and the damn airlines but not unusual these days. Any idea how it might have happened, was your case damaged? You think they pulled the gun out? And spray paint???? That's one I surely would be calling them on.

BTW what bullet did you use in the Taylor and how did it work on your elephant?

Paul, I carried my rifle and drilling in soft cases inside my tuffpac which I have done before with out incedent, just one of those things, it has been repaired by my gunsmith for a few bucks and everything is fine. He said those old drillings are a bit weak at the stock connection and it is stronger now. What would a trip to Africa without a few F*ckups. I used Barnes solids 400 gr. and they preformed fantasticly (as I expected) I am a big fan of Barnes bullets be they Triple X or solids.

John, are you and Mark buddies? Seriously he has been beating on me to go to Moz the last two years for the Suni and Red Duiker, my point is I can enjoy hunting them in RSA for a few trips for the cost of one Moz trip. I will probably try in RSA again as going to Hluhluwe is now like going home for me and I enjoy Natal. I have hunted three different properties there and I guess I will try a fourth but will say the Bush lodge was very nice and the hostesses were cuites although both also married. It was interesting the first evening at dinner when Christine said "we (she and Salome ) didn't want to be slaves to young men so we married these old rich men but are now their slaves". I am sure it was in jest.

DOJ, great photo's. That hippo was a real bruiser, and you could not ask for better Grysbuck, well done. I have known Mark for quite a while but haven't spoken to him for quite some time. Please send him my best when you next speak to him.

Well I see I screwed up again sent David the same photo twice.

#1 - Red Duiker in Natal had nice 2" horns both sides and the bases were 2" each also.


#2 - Sharpes Grysbok shot this old guy first, we couldn't find him in the dark, but found him the next morning but by then the hide had sliped and no good for the full body mount I do with the small guys.

#3 - Hippo along the Sengwa River.

#4 - Hippo with full crew. The tracker on the far left is Box he is 51 yrs old with 5 wives and 32 childeren.

#5 - 2nd Sharpes Grysbok - younger bull with 2 4/16" horn.

#6 - Management Bull, young abou 15-20 yrs old. Russ Broom had 15 mgmt permits. It was fun and being in the thick Jess with a herd of these guys is interesting and fun. As I said above #7 just a dup of 6.

DOJ, I suspected 6&7 were duplicates, at least to my untrained eye, but thought there may be something I was missing.

in coutada 10 last month, took a red duiker the first day and a suni the second. could have shot many more over the course of the 10 day hunt. no shortage of the little critters there!
