I just returned from a sucessful 7 day buffalo hunt with Riss Broom Safaris. My PH, Jim Levenderis was a true professional and worked very hard for me. We hunted out of Chininga Camp on the Sengwe River. I got my buffalo on day two of the hunt. Jim estimated his age to be 15 to 17 years. The rest of the hunt was spent looking for bushbuck which I could not connect with but I did get a good duiker. All in all a sucessful trip with a first rate safari company and a first rate PH. My hunting partner hunted with Rory Muil. He connected on the third day of the hunt with an old bull.

Congratulations...that is a very nice buff! Is that a Krieghoff I see?

How was that for putting down the Ole' Dugga Boy?

It's actually a Chapuis 470. My first shot went off the mark and actually struck the bull in the boss on his left side and he went down like the rug was pulled from under him. After he struggled to his feet the PH said he saw fire in his eyes so he put a 500 grain solid from his 458 in his shoulder. Then I got another shot in his shoulder and Jim shot one more time. When we approached him he was struggling to get up and continue the fight bet could not and I put the finishing shot through his heart. From the first shot till my third, things happened so fast I was having a hard time remembering firing my second shot. The initial shot was a Woodleigh 500 grain soft point and the follow up shots were Woodleigh 500 grain solids. The soft point completely failed. All we found was a small piece of lead and about two thirds of the jacket. The solids could be reloaded and used again. Pretty damn exciting for my first buffalo.

470FAN,

Congrats on the great buffalo. I was in Chininga on Sept 12 and 13 and heard the story of your buffalo from Jim. He was a very entertaining guy.

Doug,
Were you the leopard hunter that was in after I left? Here is a photo of the recovered bullets from the buffalo.

No, I was actually in the Binga camp while you were in Chininga. I was there from Sept 1-14 hunting buff, leopard and ele.. I shot a nice buffalo on the 6th, but we had no leopards feeding and the best ivory that we saw was about 35 lds (maybe). It seems that the ele bulls were staying in the park during the day and venturing into our area only at night. I was holding out for a little better ivory so we moved to Chininga to see what we could fing there. We chased lot of bulls, but no luck.

I hunt with a 416 Remington Mag. Blaser. Would you recommend the Woodleigh solids for my elephant hunt on my next trip to Zim?

I have used 400 grain Swift A-frames on buffalo with excellent one shot kill results. But the elephant I think will need solids for sure...I'm not sure what to go with.

I'm only a fan of reading on this site, but from what I've read from all of the elephant and hippo hunters... solids, solids, solids... that skull is big and thick, and any bone you hit on a heart-lung shot will wreck havoc on a soft point of any kind.. just my observation..

see 450 no 2's post and pics.. and someone posted some good pics with the soft points barely embedded in the skull of a cow ele I believe... very infomative..

Tim,
After seeing this soft point fail I would not consider using anything but solids. Actually my PH said if he knew I has a soft point in the right barrel, he would have had me change to solids only. My PH in Tanzania in 03 said to use only solids. The Woodleigh solids seem to have favorable recomendations from the PH's I have hunted with. They also like the Trophy Bonded Sledhammers with the flat nose. Defenately only solids for elephant.

We also hunted Chyninga with Rory in August. Both my bulls were one shot kills with trophy bonded bearclaws through the shoulder. One dropped to the shot and one ran 40 yards. I did shoot them again with solids but they werent needed. Even the best softpoints wont work on buffalo bosses or elephant heads. The first shot must be a good one and I only shoot a .375!

Gunny,
My hunting partner also used a 375 H&H. His first shot, Barnes TSX 300 grain performed perfectly. The next three Barnes solids penetrated completely. The buffalo skulls in the skinning shed must have been yours I looked at. Nice bulls.

Hey Gunny,

While I was at Kabuba the supply truck visited the camp. They had your two buff skulls on the back. You shot two very nice bulls. Well done.

Very nice bull... But I don't think saying the soft failed is accurate, they aren't designed to hit buffalo horn. That sh*t is hard and will even deflect solids sometimes. Anyway, congrats on the great buffalo.
