This was my first ever Safari, and I would go it alone, which was somewhat intimidating.
I found jakkalskuil safaris through friends. Actually 5 friends that have hunted with Kobus de Villiers on multiple occasions, all giving glowing reviews.
As you can imagine, I had a million stupid questions, but Kobus and my friends were very patient with me.

Kobus arranged a meet and greet for me at Joberg, which was my greatest concern. Finding everything and getting through the SAPS and on to the hunt. This was most helpful. Bypassing the hustlers and getting me on my connecting flight to Bloemfontein.

The accommodations would be described by most as modest, but the were perfect as far as I was concerned and quite comfortable. The only things I would add to the accommodations would be a rifle rack and a radio. You probably wouldn't miss the radio if hunting with a group, but hunting alone, it would have been nice company. I shared this feedback with Kobus and he agreed.

This is just my opinion, but you know you have a good PH when he get more excited than you do when you get in range of a quality animal. And I had no idea what a quality animal was. This was my first trip, so they all looked good to me! Hunting with Kobus is like hunting with your own personal hunting and shooting coach. He has a warm and inviting personality with a good sense of humor and an eagles eye for quality animals as you will see.. keep reading.

The food was just amazing. His wife should be cooking for a King somewhere. I don't think Kobus knows how lucky he is. Even with all the walking, climbing and exercise I got, I still managed to put on 8 pounds! They have a few of their own dairy cows and I just love raw milk! You cannot get it in the U.S. unless you know a farmer, their own chickens so fresh eggs every morning.. The food was just spectacular.

The animals: I may post details of the specific animals hunted later, after I transcribe my notes, but for this report I will just list the animals and attempt to post a few pictures if I can figure it out.

Zebra

warthog

Impala PHASA score 56 Silver medal

Blue Wildebeest PHASA score 72 Bronze medal

Gemsbok(bull) PHASA score 93 Gold Medal

cape kudu PHASA score 116 Gol medal

blesbok PHASA score 43 3/4 Silver medal

Springbok PHASA score 42 7/8 GOLD medal and should also meet gold requirements for Rowland Ward Which I never even heard of before talking to Kobus.

His website DOES NOT do his operation justice. I told him that he needs better photo's of the accommodations, and the property. The main ranch is over 33,000+ acres with another 1200+ acres on the orange river, and he has access to MUCH more.

NONE of the animals taken were the first sighted, and many of them were quality animals! Kobus works hard as does his team of bushmen, looking for the very best animals.

Kobus and his team exceeded my expectations 100 times over and then some.. It was the time of my life.

This was supposed to be my one and only "bucket list" safari.
Would I do it again? your damn right I'd do it again! And I told Kobus to pencil me in for two weeks in April of 2014 I'm not sure what I'll hunt yet, but I AM GOING!

Now if one of you guys can tell me how to post a picture in here I'll attach some photos. I have fooled around with it for the last hour and can't seem to get it.

On the way home, I talked with several hunters in the airport. None of them had any clue about their trophy's. They all just said "their PH said it was a good animal". Now it was only 6 different guys, but I can't imagime a PH not measuring the animal if he though it was that good. It would be to his benefit as well, would it not? Just one more reason I would highly recommend jakkalskuil safaris Kobus is hunter as well as a guide. He is a member of PHASA as well as SCI, and knows how to recognize a quality animal and goes above and beyond for his clients.

Lets try this...

Congratulations. I love the excitement of somebodys first safari. There is nothing to compare it to. Glad your going back, but would love to see you experience a new area with different animals.

Forgot the Rifles. Sako AV in 375 H&H and a Remington 700 in 30-06

For the 375 I used 76.0 grains of W-760 behind a 300 grain Nosler Partition.

I shot the warthog, Blue Wildebeest, and Kudu with the 375. Every shot was a pass through, so no bullets recovered.

For the 06 I used 57.0 grains of H4831 behind a 180 grain Nosler Partition. Everything else I shot was with the 06. Three bullets were recovered, one from the Impala, one from the Zebra, and one from the Blesbok. The front cores were all missing, but performed well.

Great first safari!~

We seldom get to choose
But I've seen them go both ways
And I would rather go out in a blaze of glory
Than to slowly rot away!

I have hunted several times with Kobus DeVilliers of Jakkalskuil Safaris. It is a small personal operation. Everything Frank says about the quality and personality is true. I have hunted with several larger and more well known operations, but I always return to Kobus DeVilliers and have never been anything other than delighted with the experience.
