Wow. Thanks for the great report. I have been thinking about doing this hunt myself. Your report was helpful.
Love the artistic photography. It really captures the essence of small safari details.

David, it was a great pleasure to read your excellent report. I particularly enjoyed your superb photographs.

And what a magnificent, ancient bull elephant! Tracked and stalked as it should be done.

Congratulations - and many thanks for sharing your experience.

David,

Superb safari and your report is very detailed and love the images you created with the 7D 70-200mm combo!

Did you use the f/4L IS?

Thank you!

Late bloomer looking at the photos it looks like he used the 2.8 but I have been wrong before. Hard to get that bokeh with 4

That's was my first thought as well upon first viewing his wonderful images, the bokeh is just beautiful and creamy!

However, I checked the EXIF's and everything is f/4 and above...I just think he had superb control over the images he created by shooting the zoom long but up close... and that would be the way to go to get the DOF he did.

Just awesome mastery over his gear!

Thanks for the reply Anton! tu2

Guys, I used the Canon 70-200 f/4L lens for virtually all of the shots using the 7D.

I appreciate your comments, especially since I admire your talents too!

Dave

2 years ago when I was doing a double ele bull there we had shot a 55 and then decided that the second must be 70 odd. We then tracked a bull that we estimated at 60 and his left ear was deformed in the sence that he could not use it and depending on the angle of his head would flop over left eye- looking at the pics of your amazing bull - I wounder if he is the same guy?!!

Buzz,

Sounds like it could be the same bull. Mine had a hole in the upper part of his left ear that was healed up. The injury appeared to have damaged the cartilage in the ear, causing it to not hang properly. The ear was also shrunken a bit and had limited mobility.

In any case, if it was the same bull, thanks for leaving him!

It probably was- I have to tell you that it was not me who "left him" for you but Dave my client! I did my best "sales talk on Dave to shoot him" and was very disappointed when he said "NO" as it was the Hunting Gods smiled on us on the very last day - but I sure am glad that fine old bull went to worth hunter!

Small world, Buzz. One of the amazing and humbling things to me about elephant hunting is trying to imagine all of the things the the elephant has seen and been through in his long life.

I watched both of your elephant hunting videos several times while preparing for the hunt. Weird to realize you guys probably looked at that bull two years before I got there! If I ever meet up with Dave, I'll buy him a beer!
