fujotupu one of us posted 10 October 2013 09:22 Hide Post Ridgeman: The angle at which the bullet entered/exited the horn to end up punching a hole in its ear tends to suggest the shot was taken from an elevated position. Shame on you though for suggesting it might have been taken from atop of a truck - the shooter could well have been perched on an anthill. By the looks of his neat attire he didn't seem to break a sweat so certainly didn't have to work too hard to get his trophy. In reality therefore, it is not a hunt but a guaranteed execution and the chest-thumping and bravado being publicized is nothing short of bullshit.

So these two obviously don’t understand conservation and how it works, Sure I was the first to admit this was a hunt to harvest a specific animal on a very large fenced reserve, and that the Rhino was causing havoc with the reserve management and other rhinos, What made this hunt special was the fact that I got to hunt a Black Rhino and that the money went 100% into conservation not an outfitters back pocket. As for the comment of shooting off a vehicle, I will not even waist my breath in answering that, As to make such statements just shows me what an Idiot you actually are.

Read the posts carefully then conclude who the idiot is ! If it is beyond your level of comprehension, try understanding that nobody has stated you shot from the vehicle - the original poster had "heard of a rumor" - I tried defending you by putting you on an anthill .....

Fujo, while you may claim you were "defending" JK, your comments relating to "ethics" and the hunt being an "execution" are in poor taste. Did you participate in the hunt? Do you know the facts? Have you ever hunted a Black Rhino (or any Rhino for that matter)? In another post you mentioned you don't hunt anymore. Maybe you should revisit that decision. From the outside it looks like you have nothing better to do than throw stones. You come across as an unhappy man. Try adding some positive contributions rather than the stream of negative that flows from your keyboard. JCHB

Do all of these threads have to descend to this level? Good grief, give it a rest. This is one hell-of-a-trophy that anyone here would be so lucky to have taken. +1. A very unique trophy animal, in fact the only one I have seen and a couple jackasses try to ruin it. Congrats to the hunter for taking such a fine animal. ______________________ Age and Treachery Will Always Overcome Youth and Skill

Great trophy, and good for you in "putting your money where you mouth is" by providing funding for future Rhino conservation. More than can be said for some who seem to be willing to put you down for this.

Yes Matt, very well stated; no shortage of money from one of the biggest and wealthiest landowners though could have darted and moved that poor bastard to live his days out in Timbavati. THAT, (IMO) would have been an honorable gesture which would have met with the approval of many and the money would have been really well spent/contributed.

Jerry: The man in question has the land and the financial means at his disposition. Had he really been interested to do so, he could have bought the rhino and had him transferred to a 5-Star environment - he instead opted to kill it. Good for him - a great trophy nonetheless.

So you're saying that a rich hunter is not allowed to kill a rhino because he could also afford to relocate it?! Fujo, why don't we just stop all hunting. There is always a place where we can bring the animals to. Are you really so eaten up with envy?
|
One of Us |
Caracal: Envious of what? I am referring to someone who boasts about being one of the biggest landowners in SA, owns a large slice of the Timbavati, claims to put conservation and wildlife management at top level then goes and kills a black rhino because it was no longer paying its way, turned into a ball-breaker and its owner decided to have it euthanized! There is what is also something known as a "green hunt" - why not choose that option instead? In this particular instance, this BLACK rhino (critically endangered) ought to have been allowed to live his days out in solitude, or as a decoration on the wall? JK must have paid a handsome price (good for him)so the rhino eventually did "pay its way" towards the Rhino Conservation Fund (maybe). JK also resides in SA so its not a question of having to export his trophy to a distant country. By having it munching grass in his back yard (so to speak) is trophy enough and when it decides to gracefully kick the bucket he could choose the mount he prefers.

When I posted this hunt, I did not think I would have to justify myself because of my actions. The words Sustainable utilisation by hunting is the reason Rhino are alive today, I am not going to get to much into this but just a few points for you Fujotupu • Before I hunted the Black Rhino I purchased captured and relocated a younger black rhino Bull to that same reserve, • 5 years ago I relocated Black Rhino from Swaziland to the Timbavati, • I have been involved in relocating black rhino to Malawi with African Parks, This is what I have done for Black Rhino, if you would like a full break down on what I have contributed to conservation in Africa do me a favour and get off your ass and come and visit. Don’t sit there thousands of miles away and preach to me what I should do and not do. And as for the Mount, it will be a beautiful full mount for all to enjoy and appreciate. Regards JK

No I have never met JK or been to the Timbavati or hunted a Rhino. I'm just a hunter who enjoys the reports and photos like hundreds of others who come on to AR and can't understand why some unhappy people can do nothing but criticize, belittle and mock others posts. Just strikes me as sad. JCHB

I thought the entire basis for the return of legal black rhino hunting was breeding success rates and optimising population growth. CITES will issue a very limited number of permits for specific old bulls because their presence in a population hinders breeding success. The old guys have the means (size and experience I suppose) to get the ladies but no longer have the power to beget calves on a regular basis. Really old bulls simply slow rhino population growth if there are younger mature bulls in the population. Putting this bull in another area with a breeding population would just transfer the problem. Hunting/ harvesting/collecting/shooting him is clearly a sound thing to do biologically and a great example of the hunter as conservation tool. Putting this bull out to retire in another area was maybe a nice altruistic option, but I'll bet that bull would likely never have even existed if the land owner hadn't had the hope that one day a hunter would be able to legally take him. Regardless, his offspring are no doubt still running around in the bushes, doing more begetting which is what actually matters as far as I'm concerned. Congrats on a great experience and thanks for making such a significant contribution to conservation. JK You are absolutly correct. You have done an ethical hunt, payed an good price for the rhino, replaced it with an younger and now make an full Mount, so the people can educated from it. And it was an agres. one, with has to sty out of the population. Well done. Best wishes. F.

JK, congrats on a beautiful trophy and doing your part for sustainable use and wildlife conservation management.
