If you are talking about the ranch near Kamanjab, Namibia run by Jan duPlessis, I can give you a big "thumbs up" for this young man's abilities as a PH.

We actually hunted on another property and Jan served as our second PH. He is one of the best I have ever seen. His spotting and tracking abilities are excellent. The only problem I can think of is that he is nothing but sinew and muscle and can walk you to death if you let him!!! Actually he is very considerate of your capabilities and will guide you on a GREAT HUNT!!

It is of Jan that I speak apparently he is working for himself now out of tent camps on some of his own property and some of his brother's.
He offers a package for kudu, gemsbok, and mt. zebra for 7 days with a side trip to Etosha on the 8th at a reasonble price. With transfers from windhoek included.
my hunting buddy is thinking of booking with him thru a US booking agent whom I do not know the name of as I type this.
Was just wondering if he was getting into a bad deal or not. gotto look out for him sometimes Smiler

Go for it! I hunted with Jan in 2001, he's super and has an amazingly beautiful property to hunt on. The whole area is fantastic. You may even run into ele's!

I shot kudu, Hartmann's and gemsbok with him.

Ann: not meaning to sound tacky but as I recall my pal saying he found Jan thru a booking agent in Va. is that you? He was here most of the morning trying to talk me into going with him. He said he can't make up his mind which of these two outfits to go with but both sound like they are in the same area about 4 hrs north of Windhoek, Namibia.
I found Makalaan's website (PH Antonie Louw) on the web but can't find anything about Sebra. SP

Nope, that would not be me. When I hunted with Jan he was working in conjunction with Westfalen, another very good outfit and I still work with them. They are all very inexpensive and offer almost a million acres of hunting in the Loxodontia Conservancy.

I stayed in Jan's tented camp and thoroughly enjoyed myself. He and his wife work very hard, they had very good staff when I was there.

I think they are more like 5 hours out of Windhoek, it's a pretty decent drive. You'll stop for lunch at a lodge on the way, very nice all together. I expect you will have a very good and memorable hunt. If you book with him please tell him I said hello.

Communications were very difficult in that area, it is so remote, phone lines are nearly non existant. Last I knew he had no internet but maybe that has changed! That is probably why you can't find anything.

Get your Hartmann's if you go with them. You will never forget chasing them.

I was very close to booking a hunt with Jan for this summer. I met Rick Wilks at a hunting show and felt very comfortable with him. I checked references and all gave good reports. I used AR for nearly all of my Africa research and there was no reference of Jan's outfit on this site that I could find. That kind of swayed my decision to go with someone that I could find more information on. After hearing some of the previous posters, maybe I should have went with Jan.

I can provide no more information about Jan but I have hunted win Antonie at Makalaan in 2002 and again this past June 2004.I bowhunted his place with my son both times and enjoyed myself so much that when I went back in 2004 I took my wife and daughter with us also.

Antonie and his wife Melinda have a very nice hunting area with all the game one expects to find in this area. They work hard to give each hunter exactly what he /she wants. For instance I requested that we spend as much time hunting as possible and that we eat locally available foods with lots of game meats. That was exactly what we got.

The area is about 5-6 hours north of Windhoek.Antonie uses a bushman tracker and conducts all of his hunts himself.I have taken exceptional kudu, eland and red hartebeast off the ranch. Also a real toad of a warthog on both trips as well as a couple of gemsbok over 37 inches each.

I will be glad to answer any other specific questions if you like.In any case I reccommend Makallan highly and plan to return to hunt with Antonie again in 2006.

jump Well it's a done deal, I'm throwing in with my pal and going to hunt with Jan. check is in the mail for my deposit. Planning on hunting in late August '06.
Are either of you able to tell me what the terrain and temp will be like at that time of the year?
How about the staff---good/great?
Besides the usual tipping did you take anyother items along for the staff?
What did you do with your trophies after the trip/use Jan's taxidermist or another ?
thank you for your time. Smoke poler

The terrain is flats with intermittant rocky hills which you should be prepared to climb to glass and stalk the game. Temperatures will range from high 60's to high 70's during the day. Remember this is a semi-arid country so the heat is very tolerable. At night it can get pretty chilly. I always pack a Browning down stuff jacket and I was very happy to have it along.

Take LONG sleeve shirts as the wait-a-bit thorns are everywhere. I got cut to ribbons the first couple of days.

Take your best hunting boots as you will do a lot of walking and stalking. Jan has 2 children so crayons, coloring books, etc. are a nice touch. Send him an email and ask if there is anything you can bring from the States for him or his wife. Good PR!

There is a "local" taxidermist and although I was impressed with the work and the shop, I am just too chicken to send finished trophies by air.

Keep your noose in the wind and have a GREAT HUNT Wink!!

Thanks all you guys (Ann & DC300) for all the good publisity. Nowadays I'm on my own, doing most guiding myself, except when doing 2 x 2's. Sometimes I'll freelnace, like when I met DC300.
The telephone lines are very old, but I do have e-mail when the lines are working. I also have an excellent agent in the US - Rick Wilks. The website is in the making.

Jan, it is good to see you able to get on the net! Are you able to receive photos? If so, I can email you some from my hunt with you. I really have some great memories of my time with you.

+1 to the above. I hunted with Pete several years ago and had a great hunt. His PH skills were top shelf then and I imagine they have only gotten better.

I know both Antonoie and Jan, and I think you would not make a mistake by booking with either of them.
I think you should base your choice on what animals you want to hunt, and what area, as both run good operations, but their game differ slightly, and the areas they mainly hunt differ vastly.
