I just read the above quote in the Tips and Packing List thread. If this is accurate then how do people with the large bore doubles travel with them. Dr B

Because no one, but the airline ticket agent, ever sees your rifles on departure from the US. Technically, the law requires that you present your rifles to a Customs Officer before you temporarily export them from the US, but no one does this. One could get caught upon return, when you present your rifles to the Customs Officer along with your Form 4457. However, it doesn't seem that these guys check anything but the serial number on the rifles to see that they match with the Form 4457. It's just one of those technical issues that most of the Customs Officers don't appear to know. Regards, Terry Msasi haogopi mwiba [A hunter is not afraid of thorns]

A week or so back, I was watching the Beretta show on TV. They were hunting with Beretta's new semi-auto rifle in Namibia. I was wondering to myself how they managed to do that? Most African countries don't allow the import of semi-autos and they couldn't have legally exported them from the US. Regards, Terry Msasi haogopi mwiba [A hunter is not afraid of thorns]

Terry, I saw the same episode and was also wondering how they got a semi auto into Africa. I'll bet it took a couple of $$$$ from Beretta to accomplish that one. ______________________ Age and Treachery Will Always Overcome Youth and Skill

So will South Africa....Not legally though. When I did a hunt to RSA, one of the fellows who was with a friend of ours brought not one but two semi auto Remington rifles. One was chambered in 30-06 and .270. He brought them but couldn't hit the broadside of the barn. I was hunting at a different lodge than the other guys but it turned out this guy became a large asshole after missing 4 kudu. It was his fault but he blamed it on the PH. The guy couldn't hit one at 150 yards. On our way back into the US the customs officials asked to see my 4457 for my rifles I showed him and went along my way. This guy didn't even have a 4457 and I don't know what happened. I don't know what became of the guy, I kept walking and got on my flight, "our" mutual friend turned out to be not much fun in camp either but thats a different story. I don't know if his rifles got confiscated or if he spent a day or two in jail. It was his fault, hopefully he did. It would have served him right. Mink and Wall Tents don't go together.
