wester tanzania with tbgs add'l photos from crater
Hunter-Gerry Black

Safari co- Tanzania big game safaries

area- Shama camp inyonga west and east

Dates- aug 6 -27th

PH- Mike angelides

Gun- AHR CZ 375 RUM

Ammo- 300 grain north fork softs

First order of business was bait and late afternoon we found a ok buffalo and we had bait.

Day two we saw a nice eland bull and Mike said we can't pass the oppurtunity so we went after him and after a good stalk the sticks went up and I had a good Eland Bull.

Day three we checked baits and the tracker saw a nice kudu in the thicket. We followed him and after a short stalk I had a reall great 55 inch kudu

day four one of our baits had a lion on it but just not old enough but cool to see him

We found some goos mane hair at a old waterhole and decided to put a bait a little ways away and see if he was in the area.heading back to camp we saw a fresh buffalo track and after a little tracking I had buff number 2. a nice 42 inch bull

The following day produced a nice reedbuck and a nice duiker

The lion with the mane hair hit our bait and Of course it was the farthest away so we decided to fly camp for him and only had some small tents but they only covered half of us.

We sat six times and heard the lion roar many time but he would only come out after dark and go back into the thickets before light. The last night Mike put the bait high so he could not feed and the next morning we cut the bait down and he came very fast and started feeding now if he would stay until light. Well he did and I had my lion and it was day eight.

It was a great hunt and I will follow with more.

The next view days we hunted hard for a good sable and roan and came on this lion protecting a kill.

We tracked several sable and roan with no luck and did manage to find a topi which I had never shot

The following days were spent trying to get a nice sable and we finally hit gold

as luck would have it later the same day after shooting a 43 inch sable I shot a 27 inch roan.

This was a fantastic safari and my 32nd trip to africa so I had a lot to compare to. mike was a very good PH and his experience was evident. I had wanted to hunt with his father 20 years ago but never made it. I was done so Mike suggested we go to the crater for a day that was a nice bonus

as you can see hunting in the crater would be a one day safari HA!

Great photos and a first class safari. Glad to see there are still some good buffalo around.

I've never met Mike, but I met his father, George, over 20 years ago at the Tabora airstrip. I was hunting with Mike Carr-Hartley and were refueling at Tabora. The restroom was closed and so we had to p#ss behind bushes at the edge of the airstrip. There I met George, p#ssing on the next bush! Afterwards, Mike said that George was a "damn good hunter." I assume Mike is too.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments. I really can't express how TBGS operated. They covered every detail and yes they are expensive but it was worth it. Mike Agelides is a fantastic PH and really knows lions, with his heritage how could he not. I actually saw 3 leopards in the daylight but they were all miombo leopards and were either young or to small and I had shot a couple much bigger so I passed. Thanks again

Great pictures from an obviously great trip. I don't think I'm alone in wanting to follow in your footsteps. Any chance of writing up an edjucational report start to finish to teach some of us how you did it, what you did wrong and right and what you would do different. I read these to learn and make my next trip better, and maybe I'm the only one so I'll just shut up and thank you for the pictures that I would not have seen if you hadn't spent a lot of time trying to get them posted.

I will always remember the very first animal. A big gems buck bull in Namibia 1979. As all time favorite tough decision, the lion is surely long sought after and bongo shot in the Congo was also really special as no dogs but Pygmy tracker but the elephant in Botswana would also rate high as would the lord derby eland oh hell they all are the same. I get excited shooting a squirrel and if that ever stops I will stop hunting which will not happen. I hope I am still able when my granddaughter is old enough to take that would be really special.thanks again for all the kid comments

That must have been one of the best safaris and trophy collections I've seen in awhile. The Crater is icing on the cake, but I'm guessing you've been there before as well!

Excellent safari and trophies as we have discussed.

I am thinking that your big EA Greater Kudu is the best trophy of the bunch...tough call though.
