I like front sight hoods for the protection they afford against dings and dents to the front sight, but I have never seen one on a big bore that will stay in place for more than five or six shots.
Does anyone have any secrets/tips about how to keep the damned things in place?

Have a competent gunsmith hard solder (silver solder) it in place for the trip. It can be removed after you return if you don't want to keep it in place.

NECG makes a nice front sight set up where the hood slips into the slots from the rear and the hood is secured with a set screw; that combo seems to work on the hard recoiling rifles. KMule

Best advise is toss them....I keep an additional front bead in my trap grip cap or my cartridge belt.....I can't imagine shooting DG with one still on the barrel...some folks do.

I take them away but I try to keep them in some pocket, sometimes in very sunny days (at midday) they are of great help to aim better as they take some light away from the front sight. LG

Thanks, guys. I finally got some help from my gunsmith. He lightened the hood (it's the NECG Masterpiece set up) by grinding the rear at a forward sloping angle and squeezed it tighter so that it holds in the slots and the detent much better. I'm at dozens of rounds and one safari so far, and no slippage.
