Hi Sorry this is a belated posting from Buffalo taken a year or so ago by Don Hanks in our NG 47 Botswana area. Don and his wife Rena were on a 7 day buffalo package hunt and on day 4 after looking at a lot of Buffalo as you do in Botswana, we saw a small group and edged around the front to ambush them , when they never appeared we walked towards the point of the group and at about 15 yards saw this bull lying down chewing the cud , as we were only 15 yards we could not move and slowly lowered ourselfes to the ground. We sat and looked at the bull from the corner of our eyes and did not move till we felt he was settled, the only shooting path we had was straight on and he was lying down , the thick bush would not allow any movement and we did not want to risk scareing him off. I whispered to Don how he felt about a frontal brain shot. Don said at this range he was very comfortable and the fact it was from a lying down posistion with a steady rest, he was good to go. His .375 barked and the bull never even moved , it was stone dead not even a muscle shake reflex !. We knew it was big but only the tape measure told us just how good the bull was. At 47.5 inches he was truly a trophy of a lifetime. We took pictures of the bull in the shed with another trophy bull inside its horns to show the scale of how big it was. Don is a vet and ages cattle and put this Bull at 14 years old.
Don and Rena had hunted with us in the Kalahari in the late 1990's on one of the first dog/tracking leopard hunts ever. (This was Gary Miles and Warrick Evans first leopard hunt at the time) with John Abraham's Madubula Safaris.
Don took a monster Leopard and had to do field surgery on one of the dogs that the leopard tore up,. I apologize for size of photos but still trying to get the hang of it .
