My wife an I are leaving on September 1 for a 10-day hunt in Zimbabwe's Matetsi Unit 4 with PH Mark Dewet. This appears to be a hunting concession that has seen its ups and downs over the years, and apparently our camp will be Geoff Broome's old home near the Hwanke – although we plan to use several fly camps.

Anyone have any information on this area that might shed some light on what we might expect when we arrive in a few weeks?

Thanks!

My apologies if I've posted this in the wrong forum. It appears that perhaps it should have been in the 'African Big Game Hunting' forum. Mea culpa from a newbie still getting his bearings.

Thanks, Mike! This will be our second hunt in two years. Last year we went to the Binga area last September, staying at Russ Broom's camp. Our PH was Mark Dewet, who proved to be an outstanding choice. This was a seven-day hunt focusing on buffalo, and would be my first hunting safari in Africa. I have posted a hunting report with greater details.

Kim i hunted there quite a bit in the early 2000's. The camp has been redone and from the recent pics that i have seen it is looking great, the view from the camp is hard to beat for a riverless outlook.

Generally the buffalo move in big herds and i would say that 90% of the ones we hunted were shot out of herds. There are big vleis and you often catch the big herds feeding in the vleis, there is no Jesse but lots of long grass! Trophy quality is normally 37" hard boss. There are plenty of Zebra and an overabundance of Hyena but you are not allowed to use a spotlight and they are very clever. There are lots of elephant but i dont recall seeing many tuskless - thankfully the elephants are not generally as aggressive as those in the valley and the open terrain makes it quite easy to see them from a long way off.

I am sure you will have a great hunt with Mark. Oh i beleive that there are some monster lions cruising Matetsi at the moment, but totally out of bounds!!

Scott:

Many thanks for the valuable insights. I can only hope that Unit 4 is in comparable condition to when you were there, as it sounds great! As soon as I return I'll post a report. In the meantime, I finally posted last years safari in the Binga/Sengwa area.

Kim,

I just saw your report on the 2007 hunt. Good luck in Sept. Please tell Mark that Doug Sanders says hello.
