What kind of fences are you worried about?? I hunted in RSA in the Eastern Cape the ranches were all owned by family and it was over 200K the hunting preserve was 40K all it had was 3 strands of barbed wire to keep cattle when moved around the ranch... The animals never left the area for it had habitat and water...A river thru and was desolate..Saw a herd of Kudu bulls and to get to them it would take a 30 minute drive to get to them but they were moving... n. There are alot of relatively small places that are game fenced in RSA There are also some very big ones. What attrracts people to these hunts is the variety of species and abundance of game avaialble at very attractive prices. Also you can hunt from a lodge that often is quite plush and makes a more comfortable situation for non hunting observers. There also is a lot of hunting on unfenced property for certain species. We hunted common reedbuck, vaal rhebok, mt. reedbuck and cape bushbuck on farms or ranches with just common stock fences. We also could have taken steenbok, eland and blesbok on these places. There is also hunting in the parks, game reserves and vast tracks of land that are open to Kruger park. The point is that you don't have to hunt high game fenced areas just because you hunt RSA although some species may only be offered behind the high fence. Hunting RSA is not like the best areas of southern Africa to the north and it is not supposed to be. It is not better or worse but just a different experience that I and many others have enjoyed. Heck! I'm going back in '06 and am very much looking forward to it. Mark MARK H. They have high fences in the RSA, sure, but any kudu bull or his lady that cares to leave the enclosure will clear the fences effortlessly, which is really a wonderful sight to see. Then Eland do not respect fences at all, even Zebra can clear the fences if they care to take the leap. LLS

Many of the feced properties in RSA are huge. The game there is certainly not confined by any stretch of the imagination. Since the game is usually regarded as property of the landowner and to control poaching and other unsavory activities, those are the reasons for the high fences. Hunting there is far more challenging than in some of the smaller high fenced ranches here in Texas. Jerry Hoover

Most of the places I represent in Namibia have low barbed wire stock fences. Lika laomist all of the Western US. One or two places have areas that are high fenced but they are so huge you would never know it. Same for the places I rep in RSA. When I was there recently I was on a place in RSA that was over 60,000 fenced acres. I only saw the fence twice once on the way in, once on the way out. TJR ============== Todd J. Rathner The T.
