Guys are always asking about results of these discounted last minute hunts. So, here ya go.

A gentleman bought this hunt and opted to do it as a bowhunt.

He is still hunting, but here are the results so far.

OK so the bow set up used is:

Mathews Monster 80#

Arrow is Bloodsport 300/.006 thin arrow.
Head 2 blade VPA 150 grain 1" cut.

Total weight about 620 grains.

I would have recommended a heavier arrow like 900 grain.

But this arrow with only 620 grains really performed.

The hippo was shot into the ribs quartering away at 35 yards.
There is nothing as reassuring as seeing the whole arrow disappear into the hippo. It got both lungs.

The buffalo is a longer story. About 200 km in 40C heat long!

Great stuff and was the hippo on land or partially submerged? I would be interested in knowing more details.

Our first plan was a blind next to the river close to where a raft of hippo were resting. But here the bull was always on the other side and too far.

Then we stalked up to another raft of hippos that were about 30 yards out. A bull came close but was laying too low in the river to make a shot. He was 28 yards out. After waiting for an hour for him to lift his body we got impatient. So we stood up and showed ourselves to se what he would do. He performed. He stood up too ran 5 yards and stopped quartering away at 35 yards. The water only came up to his belly so Greg didn't waste time and stuck an arrow in him. We watched him head up river blowing blood out his nose. He was done in less than 5 min.

Sounds like your bow hunter was using some serious gear. Well done. When you next back in town?

Please tell us about the buffalo hunt first -i have had many many problems tracking injured buffalos by bow hunters ,very few kill a buffalo cleanly with one arrow one is a member of this forum eyedoc MIKE PICKERING .
Second i would love to know the results on hippo .
Its my humble opinion that its very difficult to perform clean kills on paquiderms and buffalo and most of the hunts are bakced by big bore rifles .
This statement isnt against bow hunting ,i love bows ,by son is a bow hunter and so one of my daugthers but on DG very few people canmot cause a mess and suffering to the game.
