Hi guys!
Here are the pics of 4 trophies I took on a short add-on hunt that followed my father's work-related trip to RSA.


Here I am with the financial impetus for the hunting! [Dad]




We hunted near Estcourt, about 2.5 hrs drive from Durban. I borrowed the PHs 300 Winchester (Model 70) with PMP 220gr SP ammo for all but the kudu which was downed with a 375 H&H and 300gr PMP soft points. Despite all the bad press about borrowed guns, these 2 performed admirably and all 4 animals died swiftly with 1 shot apiece.

My guide, Hamish Skead was a great hunter and really helped make the most of our 3 day hunt.
I can recommend him to anyone who wants a whack at gigantic kudu which he specialises in. He also happens to offer some of the best rates I have seen recently.

If you add the length of the each animal's longest horn + the spread of the wbeest you get 114 inches....who wants to try spreading the number between them????

WOW! That is a great hunt for a full safari and remarkable for short hunt. Good shooting on some very nice trophies. 51 for the kudu, 13 for the reedbuck, 28 for the wildebeeste and 22 for the impala.

For 3 days hunting, you did quite well. That Wildebeest is a hog!

All the animals were bagged on the first 2 days, the third was spent doing a lot of pistol shooting--I just couldn't keep my sticky paws off his Browning Hi-Power!

Fabolous hunt, many people don't take those quality trophies on a two week safari. That wildebeest has really thick bases.

Congratulations. Does the PH have a website? What is his company's name?

Good going Bog! Looks like you had a great "mini hunt".

I'm glad that you and your dad took the few extra days to have some fun while on business. Too many people just fly in and out of countrys, and miss out on potential good hunting. Even if only for a few days.

I suppose you could have done better on a 3 day hunt but it would be hard to imagine. Good trophies all and that reedbuck is a bruiser.

Your kudu looks great! How big? He will make a great rug with his markings. Do you have a web-site for your PH?

OK, there don't seem to be any more takers so I will divulge the measurements:

Kudu: 50 inches
Reedbuck: 12 inces
Wildebeest: 29.5 inches (RW Trophy!)
Impala: 22.5
Total: 114


The area is hilly and open, perfect for spot/stalk hunting which was the style preferred by the PH as well. In the end, bagging the impala proved most difficult, with at least 7-8 botched stalks and lots of leopard crawling required to bring down my ram.

All the hunting was conducted on open cattle farms with no introduced game which meant a lot to me.

I am the one in all the pictures, my old man joined me on all the stalks and is in the reedbuck picture. It was a particularly old ram (10yrs) with worn down horns/teeth, which provided an fun stalk and challenging 75 yard neck shot.

I have heard many horror stories about PMP ammo failing on heavier game, but it performed very well on this small sampling, punching through the kudu's chest cavity (the sight of 6 mature bulls in the morning sun at 200yrds was a great beginning to the hunt!) and driving deep into the w/beest's rumen after a sharply quartering-on shot was taken. The 220 grain pills were also quite accurate on paper and showed good expansion on the light frame of the impala.

I will do my best to find a website for this hunting company (Lowland Safaris, PH: Hamish Skead) as the lodge/services were top notch, the trophy quality was fantastic, and the day fees were very reasonable.

At $120 a day, the services of a talented PH cannot be had for much less, and the range of species/quality of accomodation equals much more expensive places I have stayed at in the Northern Province. I won't be some kind of shill for this operation, but will post the outfitter's details in a day or so, in case anyone here is researching for a free ranging SA hunt.

I don't know all the trophy fees, but for example a kudu was about $650 and $130 for impala/blesbuck/warthog. Pretty reasonable overall, and a bargain when compared to many other places.

It's sad when a caring father can't even take his son or daughter hunting without some jealous bastard such as "Charger" coming out of his sewer to spew out ignorant BS and nonsence.

Every parent, rich or poor, should try to take their children out hunting. It makes no differance if it's for deer in the woods behind the house, or abroad on more exotic game.

I say Boghossians father deserves a big - for doing his best to give his son such an opportunity. And the good memories will be with them both for their lifetime.

Ditto!! Some of the greatest memories I have are hunting with my father. Including hunting deer with him last year. He is a spry 82 and still hunts and as long as the deer cooperate and come within 50 yards he will get them. The father/son hunts mean more are we get older.
