My wife and I just returned from 2 weeks in Namibia. I hunted with Danie Strauss @ Kowas Safaris. He is in the Dordabis area and is the former president of NAPHA. We previously hunted with Danie in 2006. I took 4 gold medal animals- duiker, steenbok, springbok and blue wildebeast. I also took 3 oryx and 1 springbok for camp meat and 1 springbok for leopard bait. All animals were taken with a pre-64 Winchester in .338WM and a Conquest 3.5x10x44 scope and handloaded 225 grain triple shocks. Shots ranged from 40-165 yards. I recovered bullets from the far hides of two oryx- 1 taken at 50 yards and 1 at 150 yards. The recovered weights were 224.6 grains and 225.4 grains (meat under the petals). Each bullet had penetrated both front shoulders.

We had a great time and plan on returning to Namibia in 2010. Kowas is an excellent place to stay and the Strauss family are wonderful hosts.

Thanks for the assist on the pictures. I was thrilled with the steenbok, but the wildebeast is my favorite trophy. I looked for that old guy for 3 days before I finally got a shot. He had a 30" spread and scored right at 200 with a broken tip. I highly recommend Danie and Kowas.

I'm booked with Danie for 2009. Sounds great to me.

We had a memorable hunt earlier in June with Danie and Ansie and got several wonderful trophies. But, rabies has evidently decimated the local kudu population. I think Danie said he lost 70%-80% of his kudu. I missed one very nice bull which the trackers had never seen before and must have wandered in from a neighboring ranch. After being shot at, he decided to go back home and we spent the last couple of days hanging around camp or doing game drives. According to the trackers, there wasn't another shootable bull on the farm. Danie implied they had filled their kudu quotas on the local ranches on which they had permission to hunt and were having to go six hours north to find kudu. When I offered to pay the extra costs of hunting in another area or ranch, Danie said that wasn't necessary. Kowas is noted for their kudu but I don't know what their plans are for the next year or two until the younger bulls mature.

They found a shooter on Kowas while I was there and a very nice young male. I took a kudu there in 06, so I did not look for them. He did not mention anything about traveling for them either. A leopard killed a kudu calf on one of the other properties while I was there. We sat in a blind one evening trying to get the cat, but had no luck.
