you are most welcome Paul. I am no expert, but I have several friends (like 465 H&H) who have made multiple trips there, and I listen to what they tell me. Plus, I made some less than optimal choices on my first (but not last!) visit to Africa. I am a sort-of Everyman here, if I can do it, anybody with even a decent job can do it.
You just have to want it bad enough...

God Bless all of us here in the coming year.

Rich: Glass Buttes! What fun. I was there about five years ago, but doubt I will make it this March. Still have some obsidian from that trip. But my bride and I are discussing the Valley of Fire in late March for atlatl fun. Perhaps I can buy you a Fosters and we can talk about Africa away from the campfire ...

I would enjoy that immensely. What are the date for this year? If it fits, I may get to go there, AND make the Phoenix long range American Credmoor Cup and the SW Winternationals black powder 800/900/1000 yard matches. They run Mar19-22 at the Ben Avery range. Man, I tell you, this retirement is almost as tough as working...but the trips are much more enjoyable, as is the company.

regards,

Rich

Great photos and buff, Rich. Congratulations!

BTW, I don't buy what you've been told about 2,400 fps being too fast for close work with your big boomer.

I have settled on Barnes 570s at 2,500 fps in my .500A2. While that much speed may not be strictly necessary, I can tell you that it's no disadvantage!

Quite the contrary! The Barnes bullets kill elephant and buff at close range like lightning bolts when driven that fast!

my thanks to all of you who posted. I am just a regular guy who had the dream, and finally made it happen. I will be going again, 15-18 months I think. I think of all of you as friends, and this was just my story. Africa is so different, to try and define it limits it; and those of you who have made the trip know Africa cannot be limited by definition. The game is in herds of hundreds, and the sunrise and sunset are glorious.

I always thought you were a bit of a clothes-horse. Wink

Seriously though, congrats on your trip and thanks for sharing the pics and story. I just finally noticed them here. Looks like a fantastic time. And I agree with you...most of us mere mortals cannot put Africa into words.

All the best,
Canuck

Nice buff and great report, Rich. I've oft wondered what it would be like to hunt in the rainy season... you provided a good description!

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
