My wife and I just finished a hunt om 10/19/2018 in Matetsi unit 1. This was our 6th trip to Zimbabwe so we were not new to hunting in Africa. We stayed at Abe Smit's camp (Mabalengwe Safaris) which is just 1 hour from Victoria Falls airport. Abe has an especially nice facility. The chalets were all very clean and the entire operation was top notch and professional by far the best I had experienced. The food was also very very good. The other nice plus was commercial power was available so we were not tied to generators running.
I did my hunting with PH Gary Hopkins out of Bulawayo Zimbabwe (Phone 263 78 422 3067). My focus was Bull Elephant with something 60# or bigger. This area is best
put "Jurassic Park" In 14 days of hunting We saw over 150 zebra,750 buffalo,400 kudu including 6 bulls in the mid 50s, 200 giraffe, thousands of Impala, 150 Eland including a Old blue Bull pushing 40" that I took, 200 water Buck with several very nice bulls, I took a 29.5 inch very wide bull. Over 1000 elephants. I took a Hyena with a 21" skull. Lots of warthogs,Diker,some cliff springers, Roan and Lions. Lots and lots of Lions. We saw 10 lions in 3 groups in just one day. We saw heavy maned males almost every day. I did not find an elephant bull that was what I was looking for as there were big fires burning in neighboring Forestry and Kazuma blocking elephant migration to the ample water in Matetsi unit 1. This was a great hunt with fantastic Facilities. I would highly recommend it.

Gary has been telling me how great the hunting is in Unit 1 and I've heard nothing but rave reviews. I'm excited for the folks I have booked there in '19.

Yes Matetsi 1 is a special place !
So close to Vic Falls and so wild.
The camp is run very well by Abe.
I was there in August this year and had a great time. Never seen so many big buffalo in one place !
