Took a trip to Mozambique this June. Hunted on some private ground owned by a Portuguese company called SAPAP. 30,000 hectares fenced, but with elephant and buffalo traveling in and out of the property. Had the luxury of two PHs, Edgar Cordeiro and Manuel Vassalo, both of who I have hunted with from huntwildportugal. Also a young PH Christiano furtado from Brassil that followed along when he could and took all my awesome photos! My main goal was a Bush Pig, but I also shot a blue wildebeest, Kudu, Zebra and an Impala. All hunting was done walking, or in the tree in the case of the bush Pig. Also seen but not hunted were Southern Reedbuck, Steenbok, common and red duiker, ostrich, hare, and buffalo, as well as various birds. Took one day to visit Kruger, will post some of those photos later. rifle was Blaser K96 30-06, 220 nosler partitions. Also as a side note, I flew United Tap from Boise ID to Maputo. Even with a 12 hr layover in Lisbon my luggage was checked all the way through. On the way back (12 hr layover in Lisbon) luggage was checked through to Newark. There is a nice hotel 5 min walk from the airport in Lisbon call TRYP that I used both ways. Made the trip very pleasant. Also my ammo was in the gun case both ways. TAP prefers it this way. Enough writing, I'll let the photos tell the story. <a href="http://http://s791.photobucket.com/user/eny1232hunt/media/DSCN8738.jpg.html" target="_blank"><a href="http://http://s791.photobucket.com/user/eny1232hunt/media/DSCN8717.jpg.html" target="_blank"> </a> <a href="http://http://s791.photobucket.com/user/eny1232hunt/media/DSCN8717.jpg.html" target="_blank"> </a> </a> <IMG class="inline_image" SRC="http://i791.photobucket.com/albums/yy198/eny1232h<a href="http://http://s791.photobucket.com/user/eny1232hunt/media/DSCN8717.jpg.html" target="_blank"></a> [IMG]http:/ [/url sorry for the repeats, hate photo bucket!

Nice Does this area have an un fenced border along Kruger? Thanks

No, it is a bit south of Kruger, but right on the border of SA.

Neat area. I stumbled on to a You Tube video taken on this place in 2012. Lots of wildebeest, kudu, Impala and zebra that appear not very spooky. Interesting scene of buffalo being loaded on to a trailer with a tractor front end loader. Are the buffalo resident or transient? Looks like the area has been well rehabilitated.

Nice. Love the choice of rifles... On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died. Great hunt and trophies. MJines likely appreciates you not blocking out your face, but some may have preferred you to block out that Blaser! All jokes aside, very nice. I meant to be DSC Member...bad typing skills. Marcus Cady DRSS

Thanks for the nice comments.Yes I'll own up to the Blaser, it starts with a k though, not an R. Just over 6lbs all dressed and a little tricky to shoot if I don't practice. got my first scope tag ever twisted around shooting behind me out of the hammock. was so excited about the pig I never knew it till someone asked about the blood an my forehead

It´s great to see this report ! Outstanding pictures ! Hope you had a great time with Edgar, Manuel, and my friend Cristiano. How was the experience of using the hammocks ? I could bet this idea came from a young PH mind....

The hammocks are very quiet, you just need some place to put your feet to steady for the shot.

Damn, those Ostrich look lost and out of place in their new element. Nice Bushpig though.

The lowveld always had ostrich occurring naturally .

a great report and thank you for sharing.

Was under the impression it was somewhere in Mozambique and even so, heavily forested areas such as the photo depicts, are not a typical Ostrich habitat so leaves one to wonder. Nothing wrong with it though so no reason to jump to conclusions.

I think these were reintroduced to this property. Generally we saw them in more open areas, such as the zebra photo.

Back in the early 90's I did a lot of hunting in the mwenezi area of Southern Zimbabwe lowveld. This is Mopani veld . Yet we saw sign and actual cheetah multiple times on hunts. Also not a typical environment to expect them in . Yet they thrived. I wonder if these areas still have the cheetah numbers as prey animal numbers must surely be down.

If there were sufficient plains game as a food source Cheetah would survive; the same however cannot be said about Ostrich within a forested area in Mozambique (totally environment unfriendly) which strongly suggests these were transplanted, seeing Mozambique is not an African country known for Ostrich populations. If there are predators around (very likely) those Ostriches will not thrive, least survive, as their entire clutch of chicks wouldn't last a day.
|
One of Us |
And the chicks would survive in the savannah ? I really don't know ostriches that well other than they occur naturally in the Kruger National Park.
