Went to the big Tulsa gunshow today and saw a Competitor chambered in 300 win mag!!!.....it was plated, had what looked to be a 14-15" barrel, removable muzzlebrake and was in excellent condition......the owner said he had fired it less than 20 times.....I didn't doubt his word [Big Grin]

He said it had the recoil of a 44 mag........ maybe, but I do doubt that just a bit.....OK, I doubt it a bunch!!! [Big Grin]

He did say the blast was in the 50 BMG rifle league.....didn't doubt that one either.....

Sure would like to try it with and without the brake....at least once without......

Oh yeah, the asking price was close to $500.....

I passed [Big Grin]

Mark,

Very inefficient cartridge for that barrel length, lots of blast and noise, no wonder you passed!

Would have been a fun and tempting toy at $350.00 though.....could have had alot of fun developing 308win duplicate balistics loads [Razz]

Mark The Competitor pistol is one of the best pistol for shooting the big Mag. out of. I have a 375 JRS with a 16" BBL With muzzle brake on it and it kick less then me 45/70 Contender. My 375 JRS will shot a 260gr bullet at 2600 fps and a 300gr bullet at 2450 fps.

My Competitor in 300 Weatherby with full power 180 gr loads rises no more than about one inch under recoil. It does kick back a very small amount. That brake is excellent. Paul is right, it kicks a LOT less than my 45/70 with even medium loads. Get one!

I'm sure the recoil would be manageable, I'm just not sure the 300 win mag is the right choice in a 14" barrel! [Big Grin]

When the Encore was new, I talked to Ed Kirkpatrick (Ed's TCs) about a 300 win mag Encore pistol barrel I had seen advertised. He said the factory made one and compared velocities to a 30-06 of the same length.....the velocities were virtually identicle.....That being the case, why burn the extra powder? Unless you are really impressed by muzzle blast and flash, why not just go with the 30-06???

Now, if you necked the case up to .35 or larger, then it might be reasonable.....but I'm not sure it would do any more than a 350 Rem Mag???

GonHuntin, I'm not sure how close mine is to a 30/06 in the same length barrel, but I'm sure going to find out. If so, I will get a barreled action in the smaller caliber. I like impressive pistols but hate wasting money. Will chrono the pistol soon. I was hoping to get at least '06 power in a rifle. The '06 should be a real pussycat in a braked barrel.

Mark & Wilson I have a Competitor in 308 Winchester with a 16" BBL and I get just a little over 2600 fps with a 150gr bullet. Wilson how about your 300 Weatherby with a 150gr bullet how fast is it going. Mark the mid grip guns do better with handing the recoil.

Haven't loaded any 150 grainers yet. I'll let you know as soon as I can get some more. All have been taken for rifles. Do you have data for heavier bullets in 308?

Paul

If you remember, I have a Competitor with 3 barreled actions, so I'm familiar with how the Competitor handles recoil. I'd like to add a 7-08 or 284 win barrel and maybe something in 35 cal.....some day. If I do, I may just buy another complete gun because I only have one grip/stock assembly now.

If the 300 win mag Competitor at the gunshow had been more reasonably priced, I would have been tempted......even knowing that it wouldn't do much more than a 30-06. I have a good friend that is a dealer, so I could probably buy another Competitor at dealer cost......

Gentlemen?
I just picked up and fired my new competitor today. 22-250. MSSmagum liked his so well I decided to get one. So far I like it. put 4 shots into 1" with factory ammo. Only problem is the trigger.First it is toooo small (or my finger is to big). 2nd the safty thingy is real rough in operation. as i take up the safty it feels like everything inside is grinding together. after the trigger has been puled and the gun not cocked this can be felt real well. Is this normal? Any suggestions form you long time owners on what needs to be done to the trigger. Also since I have large hands I cannot get the trigger finger at the right angle. appears that a little of the stock (composit) should be ground off to allow a stright in appraoch to the trigger. Apprecieate any hints.
