Wonder how these will perform in longer pistol length barrels?? Above, the new 243 WSSM (left) compared to the 243 Winchester. To the right, the new 223 WSSM (center) compared to the 223 (left) and 22-250. Mike Do you know what the parent cases are for those Short Magnum shells are? They look really strange but I wonder how well they work?? Rich Jake

I think the cases are off the 404 Jeff case. One would need a Mag bolt face on like a XP. I believe they are shorten WSM cases. Sure look interesting to me. I might be wrong but that is what I have read.

Looks like they are carrying the "PPC" concept to an extreme here. What is the case diameter on these? Regards

Are they safe in the Encore? Can they be chambered with a proper throat? Maybe Mike Bellm can answer this one? Fireball

I have an extra bolt for my XP swictch barrel and am thinking of making a 6.5 wssm with fast twist for whisper type ballistics. I would appreciate any ideas pro's or con. project to be started after dec

Fireball, You could safely use the cartridge in an Encore as long as you don't run it beyond the Encore's limits. Just as you load down a 45-70 in a Contender as compared to what you could load the same case in a Ruger #1. I don't think you can run it as hard as you could in a bolt gun though. There is a good chance you can get the same velocity with a 6.5-284 safely in an Encore as you could get with the 6.5 WSSM with less pressure/back thrust against the frame. My non-technical 2 cents worth. Pokerplayer, Don't know what kind of comment to make until we find out how much smaller it is than the WSM capacity. As far as using the larger bullets, I don't think you will have any advantage over the 130 & 140 VLD's. Time of flight takes precedence over heavier bullets if it is accuracy at long ranges you are seeking. Since it is in the air a shorter period of time the wind doesn't have as much time to move it around as it does the heavier bullets. From what I have considered to this point, the 140 Sierra is a better bullet for long range shooting (group-shooting) overall than the Sierra 155. What would be the primary purpose of this XP? xphunter

Pokerplayer, When I get my 6.5-284 rolling I will be able to see how much fudge room I have at 1,000 yards. Of course, with a shorter case you will end up having more rifling length than you would with a 284 case as the parent all things being the same. Some say you can get more velocity out of that type of case design than you can from the longer traditional cases. The OAL should be perfect for an XP. What twist do you plan on using? Barrel manufacturer? Smith? Sounds like a great project to me. xphunter

I may waste a lot of money, but the 300whisper will loose less velocitcy than most any I have heard of, but I think 6.5 may be a little better with a 1 in 8. I am willing to consider all ideas or theories.

Pokerplayer, If I remember right my Krieger barrel is a 1 in 8. I would get on the benchrest forums and ask all the questions and read all the posts you can about 6.5 bullets and long range shooting. Precision Shooting put out a book about a year ago on 1,000 yard shooting that has helped give me some insight. Their magazine is good to if you are not a subscriber. I would personally recommend Greg Tannel for the work. He makes tooling for other precision smiths, builds long range rigs that win, and competes at 1,000 matches also and usually places in the top 10 at nationals. On top of that, he is enjoyable to work with. www.gtrtooling.com I have learned lessons myself that were costly. Some of which were good choices and others not so good. I tend to learn more from the bad projects that don't meet expectations. That is likely true for most of us. I look forward to what you ultimately decide to build. I know of one other on this forum that is considering a 6.5WSM for long range deer and antelope hunting. To my knowledge it won't be built for punching paper at 1,000 yards. xphunter
