I was able to take my cow with my 358 win last week here in WY. It rained the first 30 hours so I went home (38 miles) from camp to the house. I left the house at 2pm and was parked ready to start hunting by 3:30. I looked down the ridge into the cut and there was a 340 class bull looking up at me from about 120 yards. Since I did not have a bull tag he just looked at me and smiled and very slowly walked up the hill across from me. While I watched this smart ass elk walk away, I looked off to my right and farther up the hill are 3 skin headed cows looking at me. I worked myself down to a rock pile. I used my range finder to check the distance and the elk were 298 yards. Knowing this is the out side edge of the range I was set up to try, I steadied the lone eagle on the rock and pull the trigger. At the shot the elk quickly took 3 steps and stopped. I looked down to put another round in the chamber and when I looked up the elk was rolling down the hill. She stopped kicked her legs 3 or 4 times and became still. When I reached the elk I found I had hit her behind the shoulder midway between back and chest. The up hill angle and her body angle had put the 180 grain SSP through the lungs and out the off side flank. The complete pass through let me know that at 300 yards my 358 has enough energy to do the job. I had questioned on this issue but knowing my gun and its ability to put the bullet were I wanted it I had to trust it. My friend had a hard time believing that the elk folded up so fast at that distance. I have to say that was one of the most exciting shots I have ever taken. As always I did not get any pictures. I had the camera but know film. Olefish

HATS OFF to you on making a fine shot and filling the freezer as well. Sounds like you had excellent terminal performance from the 180 grain SSP. What is the MV of your load, by the way? Bobby the adverage is 2410+ using 48 grains of h322. The trick for me is to seat the bullet just off the lands. I have tried others bullets but none have stayed on track like the 180ssp. I dream about one of the xp 1100 that Ernie uses but at this time I am happy with my lone eagle. olefish
