How safe is a 6PPC in a Contender?I located a 22"Van Horn bbl,but am under the impression that the 6PPC is way too Hot @ 47+K psi, with its wide case diameter.
I have Sako factory loads for my SS Target Rifle, and the seller assures me that he was loading 1 gr under max of H322,but has not given me the actual charge. He said "it is 4 years old, was shot 35 times, and then put in the closet when his Encore arrived."
...I'd appreciate some reassurance on the quality of Van Horns work, and if the 6PPC is OK or must be down loaded from max?
...Should I work up loads with a slower burning powder, such as H4895, Benchmark,or Varget (this might be too slow),instead of H322?
...What MV should I shoot for with 70's in a 22"bbl? Full power loads are "rated" to about 3150 fps in a 24"bbl.
...If you'd advise passing on it,I'd like to hear about that too!
I have a 222 RMAI, & 7-30 in 14's and have a 204 Carbine bbl on order, so I'm well endowed in the small but fast dept,...then along comes this 6PPC to make my day!

Thanks!.........
......the seller would like my answer by late Sunday so please CC your reply directly:

5or6,

The 6mmPPC is going to need to be significantly loaded down to be safe in a Contender.

I have one on order but mine's for the Encore.

I'd recommend extreme caution with your barrel.

It is not the barrel you have to worry about, it is the Contender frame. I think it very possible that you'd have frame stretch if you loaded that case to maximum. Even after you ruined your frame you could conceivably take the barrel and mount it to another frame.

Dave Van Horn's work is generally first rate. However, IMHO, I think that the cartridge is too much for the Contender frame as is the .22 PPC and 7.62x39 WHEN LOADED TO THE "MAX". You can load it down and use it with confidence.
