Gentlemen, I have a friend who has asked me to try to find out where he can buy a single shot, black powder pistol called a Hawes 'Kentuckian'. He put one together many years ago from a kit and would like to have another. The pistol has a 10 in barrel, is a 'cap and ball' style (not a revolver) , and on the barrel says 'Hawes', 'black powder only', 'Kentuckian Cal .44', 'made in italy' and has four of what appear to be proof marks, AC in a circle, AB in a square, PM? under a wreath, and a shield under a wreath. All of the metal trappings other than the barrel and lock are brass. Would appreciate any info about where he might be able to get another of these, or whether this might be an impossible search. Thank you very much.

I think most of the Hawes pistols were Germany by J.P. Sauer & Sons (and some italian made, or German made with Italian parts). Most well known are the Western Marshal and other Colt SAA style copies. I know they also imported some single shots that looked like old Stevens tip ups. I didn't know they imported black powder guns, though it's not surprising. I think most of them were 60's and 70's vintage, so your not likely to find another too fast. A search of Gunbroker, Aucton Arms and Guns America should turn up a few examples of what they sold.
