.309 Muzzle Brake

newtoot.309 Muzzle Brake
What would be the possibilities of puttting an integral muzzle brake in the barrel of my JDJ .309?? Or installing a screw on brake??
If possible, does anybody know of a gunsmith who would do such a thing? One hitch, the barrel all ready has magnaporting. I emailed JD Jones and he said he would have to cut off the magnaported p/o the barrel and then put on a screw on type brake, however, looking at the T/C Custom shop muzzle brakes (I have one on my 45/70) there seems to be enough barrel before hitting the ports on my .309 to install a screw on brake.
I also have contacted Mike Belm and he doesn't do this type of work. Any ideas, please?? Ray

JulesRay, Most likely you'll have to get the barrel cut to get rid of the slots, then have a new brake installed. Mike don't do screw on brakes. Dave Van Horn will do one for ya but it's gonna cost ya about 180 bucks. TC won't even touch a JDJ barrel or any other barrel that didn't come from them. Check with Virgin Valley Custom Guns. Maybe they will do something.

HHI6818Newtoot,
Why do you want to get rid of the Mag-na-port brake on your barrel? I have had both on my 309JDJ and I like the unbraked barrel best. My suggestion would be to have the M-N-P brake cut off and shoot it that way and if you don't like it then go with some other brake.

newtootFireball, what is the address/web/email address of EA Brown?. I want to get more recoil reductuion to get better accuracy. I'm not afraid of the .309, it doesn't hurt me, I just can't even begin to shoot it accurately. I'm sure at least p/o the problem is me -- BUT --
I can take the same Contender with a .22lr match chamber barrel and shoot 2 in gps at 100 yds, with no wind, consistently, so all of the problem is not me. I don't care if the magnaporting is left on, just want more braking action. Thanks for replies. Ray

Gary TNewtoot, I'm probably just being nosy, but why do you want the 309 braked, especially since it already has a MP?

Might not cost much more to buy a new barrel w/ an integral brake installed, especially if you have to cut the MP off the present barrel in order to install a brake. If you have to remove the MP, it would certainly be cheaper to buy a used/non-MPed 309 JDJ barrel and then get it braked. Gary T.

You didn't say how many ports you have with the Magnaporting. You might want to consider putting two more ports if you only have two. That should help a little.

Ray,
You don't have to explain to me why ya want one. If that's what ya want, that's what ya want
For me, the recoil don't bother me but the muzzle flip I can live without. Others on here may disagree but IMHO, all the brake does on short barrels is cut down or stop the muzzle flip and that quick snap of the wrist. They still kick but don't feel quite as bad without the muzzle rise. I noticed when I first started shooting hard kickers in a contender that I would change my grip[grasp] on the gun every shot. This alone would mess up my groups and was the main reason for flyers. That's one hell of a jump going from a 22 to a 309JDJ

ya just got to over come the difference

A brake may or may not help your shooting. Takes alot of practice with or without one.
If you can, maybe let someone else shoot it just to see if it's you or not. It may be the barrel it self or loads your using. Or it may be the scope or mount if your using one.
BTW, Is it an SSK or a rechambered factory barrel?

newtootMy barrel is an SSK. I have 4 Weaver type rings
(Burris signature Zee rings) with an extra hole drilled in the base and barrel. My son in law can shoot it much better than I can but still not super. I have tried many different loads, all within recommended limits. Perhaps I should just sell the barrel as is and purchase a new barrel
w/brake??? Thanks Ray

T/C nimrodJules - did you ever notice the wave of warm air you get from your magnaported barrels? I have two(2) training wheel guns (rifles)that are ported and highly enjoyed shooting them - so I had my .30 Herret done (10" barrel). Now when she barks, she also gives me warm barrel breath - nothing bad, just took some getting used to.

Ray, What kind of 3 and 5 shot groups are you getting and what kind of scope? Both my barrels were 14" factory rechambers, 1 unbraked and the 1 I have now is braked. Both would shoot 5 shots under an inch at 100 with at least a half dozen different loads.

You're gonna do WHAT with that finger?

newtootThanks for Email address, have any of you tried the "Howitzer" brake? Would it interfere with the scope viewing? I am getting about 8 in gps at 100 yds with the .309. My scope is a Burris variable handgun scope. Thanks Ray

Big BoreMy .309 came in the guise of a TC Hunter 12" .30-30 barrel that JD rechambered. Of course the Hunter is a bull barrel with the TC brake. That thing does not even move off target when I shoot, and that's a 165 gr. at 2304 fps and will put 5 into 1.5" all day long at 200 yards. There is no recoil to speak of. Fox Ridge, TC's custom shop, can put you on the brake for somewhere in the neighborhood of $100. Go to their web page, linked with TC's, and check them out. Of course, they will also have to remove the Mag-Na-Porting in order for you to get the most out of your brake.

Fox Ridge won't do anything with a barrel that's been rechambered by someone other then them. They won't do work on an SSK barrel, or Van Horn or VVCG or Bullberry or any other custom barrel. They will only work on a TC barrel in a TC chambering made by Thompson Center.

newtootAnymore ideas??? Certainly, I'm not an expert but I see no reason that the end of the present barrel couldn't be reamed out and holes drilled, then inside of reamed/drilled p/o barrel smoothed. Also, just how much barrel is required if I went the screw on brake route(P/o barrel before hitting first of the 4 magnaports seems to be enough for threading, it is compared to amount of barrel used to screw on T/C custom shop muzzle tamer) Also, I have been toying with the idea of selling all of my Contender stuff (frame, 3 barrels, dies, case, etc) and going either the Encore or Savage Striker route. Thanks for previous replies. Ray
