I recently purchased a G2 TC with a .22 LR match barrel and want to get a good deer hunting barrel next. I was looking at the 7-30 Waters, but am not sure. Will a 14" .30-30 barrel take care of my needs? Oh yeah, I am an avid reloader so no problems with different cartridges.

Here in Virginia where I hunt I would need a good brush gun. Any thoughts from you guys would help. Got a gun show coming up and I need your input so I can spend my cash wirely.

Thanks,
Raf

Raf,
I've always been partial to the 7-30 Waters.
IMHO, It's a good combo of accuracy and power.

the standard 30-30, 7-30waters, and 30-30Ackley Improved would all be good choices. others could also be mentioned, it just depends a lot on personal preference, wants, and or needs.

Raf, if you intend to hunt with a pistol get an iron sighted 10 inch 44 magnum barrel. If you want to hunt with a handgun then I suppose a 14 inch 7-30, 30/30, or 35 Remington tube, a 2x or 4x Leupold, and a Harris bipod are in order. Have fun shopping. McB

Raf,

I see your from Gloucester. I live at the beach. Where do you hunt? I hunt in Brunswick Co. Is the gun show at Hampton? Last one I went to wasn't that good. Wasn't very much TC stuff and what was there was over priced. I mostly get powder and bullets though.

Back to your question. If you plan on hunting heavy cover you may wanna think about a 45, 45-70 and 445 Supermag along with the 44mag, 7-30, 35rem and 30-30.

I would think that the 7-30 Waters is just about the perfect choice for you. This in a 14".

Hey Jules,
I hunt mostly up in Nelson County as of right now. The wooded area up there is really heavy.

Know what ya mean about the Hampton show. The ones at the Beach are no better. The best is the one up in Richmond, the Show Place. It will be next weekend. They put on a good one for around here. They have a TC dealer that is always there and I will probably go with the 7-30 Waters. A friend gave me a .30-30 barrel that needs a little work. It was left outside and got some rust. Will get it refinished. Will have to figure out what scope I will go with. Don't want to go cheap not really a rich guy. But will probably go with a good Burris.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I really appreciate it and know you guys are good for some sound stuff.

Thanks,
Raf

I can't make it next weekend. I went to the one up there this month and there prices were high on TC stuff. I know the guy your talking about. He wanted $200. + for used barrels. Have you been to Green Top Sporting Goods?

Don't forget you can order used stuff from Ron and Ed and just watch for one of your fellow AR memebers when they rebarrel.

Of course one does not see many of the 14" 7X30s for sale. Kinda make ya think the present owners like them.

10-14" 357 Max may be something you may also want to consider or even the Herretts.

Ok, so like the rest of us, you will have to have more than one barrel.
