As many of you may recall, we have seen the name Jurgen here off and on.

As I write, I am savoring the taste of Germany.... compliments of Jurgen. I received a "care package" from him today with a traditional Nutcracker gift for Dee, a photo album book that is breaking my heart enticing me to go back to Germany, and a can of authentic German weizen beer, my favorite type..... and not the same as the imported beers.

Now, if I JUST had a loaf of hefe brot (heavy bread) to go with the beer......it would be deje vous all over again. [Big Grin]

Gun Culture. Terrible, isn't it? It can be the medium through which we meet and make some really great friends.

Believe it.

I spent a few days at Burchesgaden where Hitler's home was, along with Boreman, Goering's, & others... about a half hour from where they filmed "The Sound of Music." Awesome area for sure, but all I saw in Germany was beautiful country.

Interesting to note that when you shoot your deer over there, which is preceded by extensive "training" first, you may BUY the deer from the jaeger. It is the property of the state that you are allowed to shoot. If you want to keep it, you must buy it.

Maybe Juergen will pop in here and explain it better.

I don't know what the handgun hunting provisions are like, or if there are any.

My hunting buddy's son was stationed there and that's what he said. Much class time, then a shooting test, moving and non, then you get your permit. Then if you are lucky enough to be taken out by the juergermeister(?) you pay by the pound for your trophy. Big trophy...big bucks. A very formal affair. And if you shoot and wound, the game controller fines you based on what he thinks the animal weighs and possibly bans you from hunting. Very by the book. I've met some hunters that I felt needed this kind of teaching, maybe not such a bad thing in moderation [Smile] mvm

You asked me , well here I am . Although the whole thing Mike made up of this little box is beyond what I had in mind ......!The problem with the bread is : the US customs won`t allow it ! I tried this before and always had to either eat it right there or throw it in the garbage , been there done that ! Bad enough that I had to send Weizen Bier in a can instead of a bottle , but my wife`s bread in a can ??? Never ever !
I`m not a hunter myself but my father and quite a few of my friends do hunt , so please forgive me if there`s a mistake or two in this :
Berchtesgaden and the Knigs See is part of my yearly vacation , to say it`s breathtaking is a gross understatement!Extensive training to get a hunting license is another gross understatement , but the other way round ......! It usually takes the better half of a whole year with training classes once or twice a week , where you`ll learn everything hunting related !I`m talking about trees and animal deseases , the law and shooting , everything practical and a lot of unnecessary stuff too !A veterinary surgeon that spent class with my father said , he didn`t learn all this about animals while he studied ......tells you something about it , doesn`t it !Handgun Hunting is illegal , a handgun is for a final shot on a wounded animal , PERIOD ! Muzzle energy is regulated for rifles too , depending on the animal , no shots with a .22 Hornet on a wild boar , no matter how close it is ! Now as far as meat goes , it depends on where you hunt , there is private hunting ground too (sometimes leased from the govt.) , and yes , you`ll have to buy it from the owner , he pays the lease and gets the money ! In our densly populated country I consider the "Jgerprfung" absolutely essential !And even with this kind of training I`ve heard stories and seen it myself that an adult wild boar was shot, supposedly a male, but when gutted out had a bunch of babies in her belly ....not a pretty sight by anyone`s standard !Maybe I should go back to work now and assist the US economy and sell some more Harleys , take care everybody , Jrgen [Big Grin]

'weet, you're on, Bud! Next trip through to Illinois, I know where I'm stopping!

How about liver sausage? My grandfather made the best ever, and I was too young when I helped him (more like got in the way) to remember anything about the recipe. The sad thing is that NO ONE in the family got the recipe or learned how to make it.

Now, if Mom knows how........ hmmmm.

Jurgen,
They'd probably make you eat the sausage, too. Guess I'll have to go there for sure! Miss the brats and herring sandwiches! But not the pils beer, thank you.

Thanks for the first hand accounts of hunting in customs in Germany! It is pretty much as I remembered it, but best told by one who knows for sure.

Thanks again.....Dee loves the nutcracker, btw.

Obviously we should start a new forum ........!
The liver sausage is no problem at all , if it is in a can and if it is labeled , you`ll get it through customs easily , I did this quite often !
But with offers like buckweet`s , hell , even I would go to see his mom ....!
To correct his little (mis-)understanding of the City of Danzig , this was a german city for almost 1000 years in a row (with some minor shiftings from earl to earl) after the treaty of Versailles it was given to Poland that shows it as , with a population of about 98% german there !It actually was one of the main questions before September 1st 1939 (Invasion of Poland)this and the corridor to the baltic sea !After the war , all of our eastern parts were cut from the main country and against all human rights , the people were driven out of their homeland. And yes , the US govt. watched all this without doing anything against it !I do have a map from 1958 and then it was shown as "momentarily occupied by Poland" , sad thing , since my family is from Bohemia and the Czech govt. did exactly the same thing ! But that`s not a historical forum here !

Sorry, Jurgen, but you can't send ANY meat products (among many other things)into the USA unless they are in a can bearing the seal of the USDA (US Department of Agriculture). This is to avoid the spread of myriad livestock diseases (e.g. hoof-and-mouth, mad cow, etc). I'm a former inspector, trainer, and program manager for US Customs and US Department of Agriculture operations.

I haven't had a chance to visit Germany, yet, but did develop a taste for German bier und Bratwurst [Big Grin]

We make our own bread, including gringing our own flour from grain, so if anyone would be willing to share a recipe for some dark breads, I'd love to make up a batch.

Ok , Ok , everybody , I`ve been discussing a Germany trip with Mike Bellm for quite some time now !My father used to run a Lodge in British Columbia for almost 20 years , he also toured the west coast from Alaska to Hawaii with customers from Germany . The Pre-season at the Lodge was filled with US customers that were trout fishing up there, my mom cooked them into heaven and in the evenings , we were dreaming about a tour through Germany with them ........! Fact is , it never became reality and my father is retired at the age of 63 now , but if I`d plan a tour and make all reservations and take you to places that "Joe Average" on these Mammoth-Tours never goes to , what would you say ??
Something close-up and personal , instead of ..........!Now , maybe I`m dreaming , but I could give you a view of our country and put you in touch with people that you otherwise will never get. Gotta go back to work , Jrgen

Buckweet , now you made me curious : what`s your last name ? I`m into this for over 20 years now and whenever I thought I knew everything about history , there was something else coming along !
I never met my Grandpa , not the one that came from Bohemia and not the other one that died in a Red Cross camp in Russia in 1944 . But both my Grandmothers told me all their stories about their lifes , I listened closely and this got me started in researching history , simply cause they told me stuff that was totally different than what school said !I knew that ma Grandmothers did not lie to me , so the official version was the fault .....still is , BTW !

Names are sonic and smoke , at least that`s what our great poet Goethe says .......not really the truth , but we can discuss it !
To judge from the ending it is a name from Prussia , which in turn is roughly the area north of Danzig. Some people claim that all names ending with ski or sky are of slavian origin , mostly polish from todays view. I would not accept this in general , imagine if one male with a name like this married a beautiful young girl, presto ! Now her name has changed, but what if they still live in a part where german is the mother tongue and german culture is celebrated? To be german is totally different than being american , from a cultural and from (may I say this ?) racial standpoint, compare this to your native american indians and their tribes !Germanic tribes existed just like these indian tribes , they were and still are different to each other .We have so many dialects over here (I`m not talking about "accents") languages in their own rights , with words not existing in german. This is a very broad theme in itself and it proofs that to be german has nothing to do with a passport !Have a nice weekend , take care , Jrgen [Big Grin]

Buckweet : Hi German means german spoken without any dialect or accent , very rare here , maybe a small part in northern Germany around Braunschweig has this , ALL the rest has a dialect , like I said some are languages of their own !Since we were the only country in this part of Europe that was not ( ok. a very small part was!)conquered by the romans , we kept our language , all others were romanized(France , Belgium , England.....) and therefore they speak roman languages. The most famous horses came from "Trakehnen" , this breed is still alive and the former stables (now in Russia) are put in service again by a russian family!
Prussia in turn , basically was the basement for our modern day Germany the way it is now.But like I said before , our history is so rich that we could fill days and nights talking about it .If you have a FAX machine or maybe your friend has one , I could fax you one or two maps from times long gone by . Interested ? Mail me under :
