Hey guys and gals(if any here)

Opening day was this weekend for Whitetail.

My choice for the weekend was my XP-100 SSK 458X2.Load was a 500gr Hornady at 1800fps.Load testing showed it would expand at the ranges I would use it.

First deer: 10:00am Sat. morning seen 3 deer 1 was buck, other 2 does. The lone doe(125 pounds) came in with no one behind her waited for about 15 minutes and she had no male friends.Range was 30 yds she went to the ground at the shot got up went 20 yds and that was it.Blood trail to the deer was a little more than I have seen before.Inside of the ribs was messed up but not real bad.Got her home and skined her out, this is the real shocking part a exit hole under the hide the size of a baseball, bone and other things caused blood shot meat over softball size.I lost about a spread hand size of ribs.

Deer 2:Long story but it was a Albino(#2 that I have killed)doe(65 pounds).I had 12 deer came in and see her over in the thicket and spooked and went around.I threw a stick and waved my hunter orange hat.Talked to her to get her to move. But it did not work she came to me and at 15 yds I put the hammer down.Lost both shoulder back straps and front part of the off side ribs. The bullet got a rib going in and out.It was ugly.I know it is over kill but the area I hunt for the big ones is thick and very close range. The 300gr Hornady at 2200fps is way to much.Damage is great so maybe my XP-100 SSK in 375/284 next.A 220gr at 2600 fps?????????

Got to get it to my taxidermes.

Talk to guys later.

Hello Handcannons,

Congrats on your successful hunt(s)! I've never seen an albino deer in the wild, what a trophy!

Thought I'd provide you with my results on the 220@(almost)2600fps combintaion. I shot a medium-sized doe Sunday at 70 yards with the Hornady 220 gr flatpoint started out at 2500 fps from a 16 1/4" braked Encore barrel chambered in 375 H&H. I never saw a deer go down as fast as that before. Broadside shot, the bullet went through both shoulders and the backbone, and of course exited the far side. It's still hanging, so I haven't seen what the shoulders really look like yet, but she didin't look too bad from the inside....

Cheers!, Bill

Handcannon,

Congrats on the hunt and the unusual trophy, sounds like your 458x2" is a real hammer.

Have to try it on elk some day, I bet it would perform extremely well on a 1000 pound bull.

Anyway, congrats and keep the stories coming!!

Good Hunting!!!

Unfortunately the Tennessee Legislature made it illegal to shoot albino deer. Some genes are best out of the pool!.
