In Oklahoma, the regulations for handgun hunting of big game (deer) specify a bullet weighing at least 100 grains .....I can use a 16" contender carbine in 6mm TCU with an 80 grain bullet.....but I can't use a 14" barreled handgun in the same chambering with the same 80 grain bullet??? [Mad]

Same for the 257 JDJ, can't use the 85 grain ballistic tip that works so well!!! Earlier this year, I shot a blackbuck antelope with the 257 JDJ/85 grain ballistic tip combo and got 16" of penetration!!!

Stupid, just stupid!!!

We don't consider that worse! For years, Kansas hunters were crossing the border to hunt deer in Okla. but hunters from Okla. couldn't hunt deer in Kansas.....now, we can apply for a tag in the Kansas drawing....but you know how difficult it is to draw a firearms tag in the really good areas!

When Kansas starts letting OK hunters buy over the counter tags......then OK will extend Kansas hunters the same courtesy........

until then......turn about is fair play!

Here is some more fun stuff about Kansas:

I have a disability permit that allows me to hunt with a crossbow during archery season in Okla.....I checked into hunting Kansas....and.... besides having to draw a tag, Kansas won't honor my crossbow permit....what's worse, they won't accept my Doctor's certification on the Kansas crossbow application......it MUST be signed by a Kansas doctor.......yeah, right, as difficult as it is to even get in to see a doctor, I'm sure one from out of state will get me right in....not to mention all the tests, x-rays and expense I've already been through to get the permit in OK....they want me to go through that all over again with a doctor in Kansas????? Missouri will honor my doctor's certification on their crossbow application and I don't even need one in Arkansas!

I'll take state's rights every time......but this isn't really a "state's rights" issue anymore than honoring an out of state driver's license is... Kansas doesn't seem to have a problem honoring a handicap parking permit issued by other states!!!

Mark,
If I purchase a lifetime OK license before I move, will I be able to use it while being a Kansas resident?

Yes, a person who buys a resident lifetime license can hunt in Oklahoma for the rest of his life.......

from the ODW website:

"Lifetime Licenses
Former residents who hold a resident lifetime hunting or lifetime combination license, are exempt from the purchase of the hunting license, all elk, deer, antelope and turkey permits, Oklahoma Waterfowl Hunting License and the Special Bobcat-Raccoon-Gray Fox License."

You might want to visit this link:

At this point, I'd suggest that you apply in person in OKC!!!

I got in a good argument with a game ranger while my son was taking his hunter safety course over just that same subject. I told him that I thought it was stupid that I could hunt with a 16" AR15 shorty or a mini 14 but the same caliber in a 14" Contender was illegal. He couldn't give me a good reason why, all he could say was "well that's the law". Montana has one that is just about as bad, you can only handgun hunt with a straight walled cartridge originally chambered for a handgun only. 44 Mag is OK, 444 Marlin isn't.

By the way, have you still got your 50 BMG? I am planning a trip to Knob Creek for the shoot next month.

Yep, still have the 50! I'd sure like to go to the creek some day, just never seem to make it! I have several buddies with 50s and we have been talking about all getting together one of these days at Red Castle for a 50 shoot.......

As far as the handgun regs go, I wonder if a game ranger will pull the bullets and weigh them [Big Grin]

I wish I could buy one of those monsters, my brother is going to buy one of the Barrets from a dealer while we are there. He is leaning toward the semiauto, but isn't real happy about tying up $9,000.00 in a gun and scope. Guess I will miss the big show in Tulsa to go to Knob Creek. I will send you my Email address, if you have the shoot, let me know, my brother is going to join Red Castle when we get beack so that he can have a place to shoot.
