Barrel Length / Legality Question

I had a conversation the other day that has left me puzzled. I told a friend that I was considering putting an 18" Bull Barrel on my T/C Contender Handgun Frame and using it with the Pistol Grip to use while Prairie Dog Shooting off of a Bench.

He told me that that is illegal, and that when a Contender Frame is used with an 18" Barrel it must be used with a Buttstock, ie making it a Rifle. Is this correct?

Thanks

OK Here goes..and yes some are going to PISS and MOAN about it but this is it anyway. There are NO real rules about how long your HANDGUN FRAME barrel may be.........BUT I was at a range in california and shooting that day I was with the LongBeach Sherriff about 10 of them. I had a contender handgun with a 21" 7-30 and they had to ask questions and try it. Most loved the long barreled gun. Two of them informed me that...in a BAD situation this pistol could be called a Short rifle(forget the proper term for it) and if you were a suspect....then for sure it would be taken and used as a tool in a case against you(firearm crime). Their is a federal rule limiting a rifle at 26" long as a min...(I THINK) and even though this is a handgun it fits the short barreled rifle law.......SECONDLY they told me CONTENDER handguns have NEVER been sold from the factory with a Barrel longer than 16" and while barrel may be interchanged a barrel over 16" long was a modifacation and made it a Rifle?? OK NO Thrashing me guys. This is what I was told by police. Now they did say I would NEVER be bothered at all UNLESS I was a suspect in a Robery or whatever...then you would NOT want to be caught with a barrel over 16" on it. My answer is go to your local police station and ask them...DO NOT count on the fed law about barrel length as this can be used for you...OR against you depending. As it was explained to me the handgun part is missing a Overall lenght rule allowing us a long barrel....UNLESS you get in a bind then it could be used against you. FOR ME?? I cut my longer barrels down so I never have to worry about it.
SHould be no problem for you to use a longer barrel than 16".....but again you never know...Nodays Inhabitants of the united states...NOT JUST citizens have rights just the same...More and more the liberals seem to interpet the rules in ways that BOGGLE the mind.

Handgun barrel can be any length at all. But a carbine barrel has to be NO LESS then 16" to wear a buttstock.
