Are you referring to the 7mm Winchester Short Magnum or the 7mm Remington Magnum?

I haven't shot any of the WSM's yet, but I would be extremely reluctant to shoot the 7mm Rem Mag in an Encore without a brake or porting.

The main issues here are efficiency/consistency and the question of "why" when the 7mm-08 would do basically the same thing with LOTS less recoil & muzzle blast. A 15" barrel is not best for a case with that type of capacity...

It is NOT that bad...I have had a 7mm Mag custom shop barrel in 16" ..for sure it is nOT as bad as my Vanhorn 358 Norma Mag....And for all who will tell you that it will be no better than a 7-08?? Expect about 350 -400 fps over your 7-08...not much for all the extra powder..BUT stuff that 7MM MAG pistol with a 160 grain bullet or larger and it will TOPPLE the 7-08...The 7_08 just does not have the power with the BIGGER bullets like the MAg....I know..BS to most...But with the heavier bullet?? it will be Better..I have had..Have both

I never said the 7mm Rem Mag won't better it in ballistics, but the main question could be: how dead do you need to kill a deer? From extensive hunting experience, I have concluded that for 99 percent of all shots on deer, all you really need is 2400 fps MV (in 6.5 & 7mms)and a bullet that is properly constructed for the task at hand. The 6.5 JDJ and 6.5x50R-Bellm are perfect examples. I had a 6.5x.308 on an XP for years but decided that I never saw a difference on any game animal, and the differences in trajectory were minimal as well. The 6.5x.308 bettered the JDJ by 300 fps, but as long as you feed the JDJ the 120 grain Speer or 120 grain Ballistic Tip, you get terrific terminal performance out to as far as you'll be shooting anyway.

You know what I consider my "long range" rifle? It's a 24" Encore in 6.5x55 with a 140 grain bullet at app. 2750 fps. I've killed lots of game with it -- much more than I ever killed with a Rem 700 in 7mm Rem Mag that I long ago sold.

But everyone has their own preferences and opinions. I prefer efficiency. And while I certainly will not question anyone's shooting abilities, I have seen far too many hunters who were extremely poor shots due to flinching from large, magnum calibers. I've had them show up at my home claiming something is terribly wrong with their rifle or scope or both. After checking everything out, I usually find that the gun is dead-on or at least relatively close, but when asking them to shoot for themselves, I generally find the problem is shooter error. From a relatively solid field rest or shooting sticks, most will never hit a full-size deer target at 200 yards. Some can't do it at 100. ANd I like to test some of them: After firing a "confirming" shot from the bench, I pretend to load the gun, flip on the safety and leave it on the sandbags. I then ask them to try a shot. You'd be suprised to see how much some guys will jerk the rifle in anticipation of recoil. Accurate shot placement is simply not possible.

I tell them to take their .22 and burn up lots of ammo -- and start to enjoy shooting again. And I try and sway them to a more conventional (milder) caliber like the 7-08, etc. I guess those deer have gotten bionic over the years and that nothing less than a premium bullet at 3500 fps will do the trick <grin>

But like I said, to each his own...

One thing I forgot to mention regarding the 7-08 in a 14-15" barrel: it will drive a 140 grain bullet to 2600 fps and will decidedly take any deer inside of 300 yards. And it will do so with much less hassle, much less powder and much less recoil than a 7mm Rem Mag. At this velocity level, the 140 grain Ballistic Tip performs splendidly at this velocity level, and then there's the 139 grain Hornady SST as well. ANd if you must pursue something bigger or more tenacious than a whitetail, the 140 grain Partition can reach sufficient velocity to expand sufficiently out to at least 175-200 yards.
