Depends on what you're using it for........on varmits, I like the .30 Herrett because there's a better selection of light, spire point bullets. For silhouette work, I'm partial to the Max because it handles the heavier slugs better (200 grains and above).

Depending on what your using it for of course, I would choose the .357 Herrett over both the Max and the .30 Herrett. The .357 Herrett can be loaded a little hotter.

Don't have either but would like to ask a pertinent question or two about them.

As I understand it, even though the Herrett cartridges are rimmed, they are most accurate if sized so that the Contender just barely closes on the loaded round. I.e. exact headspace is extremely critical to best accuracy.

The .357 Max being a straight rimmed type obviously has no shoulder to headspace on. How is the accuracy with that one? The silhouette boys use that one so I'm assuming the accuracy is pretty good. In fact, I believe it was developed in direct response to the silhouette shooters' need/desire to throw a bullet with a much flatter trajectory than a .44 Magnum while maintaining good knock down power and with lessened recoil to boot.

Again, don't have any recommendations but wanted to pose some possible criteria to think about.

FWIW, the .30 Herrett has some real nice ballistically efficient pointed bullets specifically designed for single shot pistol velocities. Not sure about the .357 Max but isn't there a good selection of 180 grain bullets with somewhat pointed noses? As well as some dynamite 180 grain and even 200 grain hunting bullets?

Tough choice. I would pick the 357 Max because you can shoot 357 Mag or 38's through it. My preference would be to pick them both up.

I'd choose the .357 Maximum because forming the Herrett cases is not fun--a few thousandths off and no ignition.

Max Max Max!!!!!!

Straight walled rimmed case, very contender user friendly, extremely accurate, light bullets for varmits, heavy bullets for deer and pigs, no choice in my mind. 30 Herrett is a fine round, but Max is much more versatile and for bigger animals hits much harder!
