Considering one of the following:

50 S&W
475 Linebaugh
454 Casull

in a 12" Encore . . .

Have only seen the Casull listed on anyones list of calibers (Bullberry & Fox Ridge), and I'm sure that will do everything anyone could ask of it in NA . . . but the big 50 really has me thinking.

I'd go for a 50 just for grins and the fact that even if you don't like the recoil, you can at least say you've done it Big Grin

Back in 2000, I had a factory tapered 10" 50AE with no porting and hated it, as it was the hardest kicking thing I had ever fired to that date. I just two weeks ago picked up an Encore 50AE 14" with open sights and Quad Mag-Na-Porting from this forum's classifieds, and I love it! The extra 4" and the porting make all the difference between enjoyment and pure punishment! Get a 50 of some sort, but definately get porting beer

A friend of mine had a SSK barrel chambered in 50 AE and couldn't get it to shoot very accurately. How does yours shoot?

Thus far I have only kept the Iron sights on it, and groups at 50 yards are 1-2". Not a real test of accuracy. Once I scope it [if I scope it: it makes for a fun big bore open sighted hunter] I will be better able to tell you something. Big Grin

OTT can make you a .500 S&W barrel. That's where I got mine though a 20" carbine barrel.

I think that 50's will have more options in the future for bullets and such BUT i really dont care so i built a 475 Linebaugh! Big Grin Hornady currently has brass available and my 400 grain cast runnin 1400 fps is more than enuff for charging woodchucks. Wink

I think at some point i will have On Target Technologies build me a shorter barrel and equip it with iron sights. thumb

Troy,

Just today I saw this on Ebay: Thompson-Center Encore Barrel in 475 Linebaugh Long. I was unaware of the chambering. Apparently one can produce 1600 fps on 400 gr bullet? I imagine hat this is quite a cannon out of a 12" Encore, even with the Bullberry brake jump

The fellow selling the barrel had Bullberry make the barrel using a Pac-Nor blank, with Bullberry Porting, and the chambering work was actually done by John Linebaugh.

Has anyone worked with this cartridge?

This is NOT my auction. Here is a link to the auction for curiosity seekers:

I'd think the standard 475 Linebaugh should be capable of 1600 fps with 400's from a 12" fixed breach barrel, and the long is supposed to be good for an additional 150 fps. So 400's @ 1700 fps should be attainable.

I've never loaded for the long, I prefer the "short 475" ie 480 Ruger Big Grin

And if any of the other suggestions don't seem to be enough, I know of an encore pistol chambered in 470 NE, as I recall he was quoting 500 gr @ 1800 fps Eeker I never did a get a chance to shoot it, something I haven't entirely regretted Big Grin

I had a 12" 45-70 SSK barrel a few years ago and chronographed 405 grn. cast bullets with average velocity at 1705 fps out of a Contender using Reloader No.7. No muzzel brake so I could only shoot a half dozen rounds at a time. Brass is easy to come by in 45-70. These new rounds would be hard pressed to out do a 45-70 if it is in an Encore.

Big bore AK. I have a BFR that is chambered in 50 alaskan. It has a 9 1/2" barrel and I shoot factory Buffalo Bore ammo through it. I get 1710 ft/sec with the 525 grain bullets and 1928 ft/sec with the 450 grain bullets. It is a handful but manageable with practice. I have the 600 nitro encore , a 460 weatherby 12" encore, and a 30-378 weatherby 15" encore. The only one that came apart and hurt me was the full house 460 factory loads. It ripped the gun apart. It has too much pressure.

Tembo...me too. Just a different scope set-up. I just installed a new Packy grip on mine and it feels good in the hand. Did not get to shoot it yet but it has to be better than the factory grip. No more reaching for the trigger.

Wow a 460 Weatherby pistol?! 30-378?! What kind of velocities do you get, and how far away is the muzzle blast dangerous to the game you are shooting at? Big Grin

Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!

Woody, I actually now have the Pachmayr on the 500. That is an old picture. You are right, it is MUCH more comfortable without having to reach for the trigger as with the factory grip.

Tyler, the 460 pushed a 500 grain bullet to 2088ft/sec for a little over 4800 ft/lbs of energy. The gun has a 12" barrel and weighs 4.5 lbs.HOWEVER, the first time I shot it the gun barrel was ripped off and landed about 30 feet in front of me. I survived a broken wrist and a severely cut tendon in my trigger finger. I sent it back and had it repaired ( heavier welds at the frame). I shot it twice more and the gun stayed together. Recoil was brutal, but I did not get physically hurt. I have since retired the gun to my gun safe. Too much pressure. These were the older factory loaded Weatherby 460's at 2700 ft/sec out of a rifle. The 30-378 has been shot about 35 times total and gave off about 3700ft/lbs of energy with a 15" barrel. The 460 kicked worse than the 600 nitro pistol which gives off about 5500 ft.lbs of energy with a 900 grain bullet. The barrel on it is 15" and the gun weighs about 5 1/2 lbs.On the 600 nitro pistol, leather gloves and taped up trigger fingers keep you from slicing up your fingers when shooting it. Definantely not for the inexpierienced shooter.

BIGDOGGY700: Are you the one that the pornmeister/gunsmith Gary Reeder did the 460 WM for?
In a 14 inch 458 Win Mag I get 1930 fps with a safe load using 500 gr Hornadys and H4895 powder.
You were not too far ahead of me and I was using awhole lot less powder too.

He made 2 of them in his earlier days. I have one of them, the other one was made for a doctor in ?? Ohio I think. Gary no longer puts encores out with weatherby cartridges because of pressure problems.
