I just received a reply from hornady that they have no plans to discontinue the 130 ssp bullet #3021. I have seen other posts on other forums also about this bullet being discontinued. looks like a rumor only.

The bullet being discontinued is the Sierra .30 caliber SSP.

Hey guys:

I would like to get some information from you folks on where to start with my 30-30. I am a new T/C handgun shooter and have recently received my custom Bullberry barrel....

Hi X,

I absolutely love my T/C 10" stainless 30/30 barrel. It shoots as accurately as any rifle I own. I'm sure you'll enjoy your Bullberry 14".

I'm a big fan of Winchester ball powders and had great success with 748 pushing Hornady 130-gr. SSP bullets through my barrel. I got some .75" groups (!) at 100 yards with loads a little down from max. Shooting from sandbags with a 2.5-7x scope, I don't think I can hold any tighter than that. For all I know, the barrel and load combination may be capable of putting them all through one hole.... :-)

Loads pushing maximum were grouping at 1 1/2"-2". Hunting performance has been very good with three bucks dropped with one shot each with a load midway between the best accuracy and max.

This accuracy was achieved with cases that had been fired in the barrel (factory ammo) and then neck-sized on subsequent reloadings. Set your sizing die so the shoulder of the case BARELY touches during resizing.

I seated the bullets just short of contacting the rifling. I smoked the bullet of a dummy round and adjusted the seating die a tiny bit at a time until I saw no rifling contact when the action was closed on the round.

I just purchased a 14" stainless steel 30/30 barrel, but I'm sending it to SSK to have it rechambered in .309JDJ. I hope it shoots as well as my T/C 30/30 barrel does.

Good hunting,
Bob Scott

Gunwriter Dean Grennell used to speak in a very complimentary way of the Speer .308 130 HP - he found it very accurate.

Another writer said it fragments on deer at .308 rifle velocities, but I suspect it might be a winner at 30-30 Contender velocities.

Let us know....

Cheers,
BigIron

Well, It looks like Hornady has either changed their mind or still hasn't decided what they're going to do w/ their 30 cal 130 gr SSP bullet..... In response to having read on the 'net about Hornady discontinuing the aforementioned bullet, I also sent them an e-mail a few months ago. Received 2 responses from different people. First gentleman said, "Yes, it's being discontinued." Second gentelman said, "No, it's not being discontinued." When I sent the second gentleman a second e-mail regarding the discrepency in the responses, he didn't address the issue at all. Now Drichi has received an e-mail from Hornady saying it's NOT being discontinued.... Ok, is anyone else here confused, because I sure am.... Here's the new address for the old thread. Details of my e-mail correspondance are about 1/3 down the page. Gary T

X Caliber I know I'm late in this thread but you don't have any worries with the 125 Bal Tip in the 30-30. I have used it in the 300 Whisper with good results. I never got a chance to try JD Jones alternate of the 125 Tnt. If the Bal Tips are not to your liking I would probably try out JD's second choice the Tnt. You could always email him & ask if that is still his choice.
