Anybody got any info. yet on the .270, 7mm, or .300 WSM cases in the Striker? Got a friend that's interested, but i'm not sure about their relative performance out of that short barrel.

sscoyote,
I wouldn't go with a WSM case in the Striker since you only end up with about 12 inches of actual barrel length. Personally, I would want a 14-16 inch barrel to take advantage of the case capacity better. Savage has a wonderful idea in chambering the WSM's in the Striker, they just fell short in the barrel lengths they are offering. IMHO a non-braked 308 would be a better choice over a 12 inch 300 WSM.
Thought: Savage may (I don't know) build a 14 inch barrel non-braked if requested. If so, you could add a brake later if so desired.

Sscoyote,

I would agree with Xphunter on this one. It make no sense to me to chamber the Striker in with a WSM chamber and then cut the barrel back just to get a braked barrel under 15".

From the ones I have tested for customers, top velocities, at least with normal pressures were only marginally faster then the standard 308 Striker. For the extra cost in brass, powder and such, there is no tangible advantage over the standard models.

The WSM case does amazingly well in a short barrel. My custom 338 WSM in the XP-100 will do 2950 fps with the 180 gr Ballistic Tip, thats right there in the same class as a 300 Win Mag rifle performance.

The small standard WSM rounds would be more sensitive to barrel length, especially the 270 and 7mm.

One idea would be to get a 308 striker and have it rechambered and open the bolt face to 300 WSM.

Another would be to get the WSM striker and rebarrel it with a longer barrel.

In my mind, the 300 WSM and larger rounds on that case are pretty well served with a 15" pipe. The 270 and 7mm would be better suited with a 16 to 16.5 pipe. Also if the barrel contour is large enough, the smaller WSM rounds really do not need a brake, the 300 could go either way but the 338 definately needs a brake to make it shootable.

Good Shooting!!!

Savage told me that they would build me one from their custom shop in 300WSM with a standard un-braked 15"er for around $637.00 (i think). But I was just unshure what max vel. would be with a 150gr. mvm
